EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: Aprils, 1876, Reading Matter on Every Page CIRCULAIION Ow THE STAR. Sworn ‘Statement. For the benefit of advertisers who desire the widest possible publicity for their busi- | ness announcements, at the least cost in | money, we publish the following figures and | appended affidavits: } No. of copies. | 15,197 | 15,000 | 15,405 | 15,333 | 15,000 | It was stated io this column on Wednes- ‘Cay that the reduction in salaries paid Dis- trict officials, as shown by the Commission- ers in their answer, was greater than the in- terest on the 5 65bonded debt. We intended to say that the reduction is much greater thn the intereston the bonds Issued in pay- ment of any and all work doue under the Commissioners, inclusive of repairs of streets done at cost of contractors, and al! other work done under contracts. A calculation of the cconomy eifected shows that this redac- tion in the pay rolis of the District ts large enough rot only to pay the interest,as we have here stated, but also to provide a sink- ing fund, which, if invested at 6 per cent. a@nnuaily, would pay off the entire debt of the District, old and new, at the time of the maturity of the5-65 bonds. It is also noted that the reduetion of the old bonded f edness Of the District made by the Commis- sSioners bas reduced the yearly interest pay- | ableon that account $71,95052. This added to the caving in salaries of $290,539.30 makes the total reduction on these two counts $362 540.12 per year. -2e-- Ex-Benator Schurz, in one of his speeches, has asserted that the political millenium | Will come when the colored voters will dis. | tribute themselves as equally as may be | between the parties. There is an indication | Of that good time coming in the proceedings | Of the National Colored convention at Nash- ville. Mr. Pinchback, late a claimant for a Seat in the Senate, thought the colored meu would never again vote ina solid column | With the republicans, and wanted no more | color lines. Another member urged that the | colored men hereafter vote for honest aud | competent men without reference to party. The applause which greeted these remarks shows that the colored men are at least con- sidering the propriety of anew departure. -2e. The remains of the Liberal Republi ican Party” will probably be thrown into the | balance in favor of the republican candidate | for Presitent whoever he may be. The ca- | daver of the deceased organization 1s oce1- sionally galvanized by Gen. Cochrane in New York to convince the two great na- | tional parties that it still hasa local habita- ton and a name, and doubtless in the pope | that some substantial inducement may be | held out in return forits support. The other | night in New York at a meeting of tne gen- | €ral committee, resolutions were adopted | recommending that all independent voters | address themselves seasonably to the re spective national conventions of the rep ean and democratic parties, to the end that their proceedings shali fairly answer to the country whether either of them is to be trusted for an honest administration of the government, but at the same time declaring that of the two political parties the demo- cratic has proved less accessible to the legiti mate ipfiuences of public opinion than the republican. During the meeting a member read a preamble and resolutions declaring James G. Blaine to be the choice of the lib- eral republicans for the next President of the United States; but the chairman, evi- dently thinking the action premature, railed that, as the committee on resolutions had already canvassed the subject fully, the mo- ion was out of order. aeeaens Some of the papers are curious to know what the President will do to the case of the bill, now before him, reducing the salary of bis office to $25,000 after March 4, 1s77. Since the President approved the bill increasing bis salary to $50,000, consistency should prompt him to veto the bill reducing it. Tne bill is one in which, personally, the Prest- dent is supposed to have no interest, and he | could therefore veto it with perfect propri- ety. Col. Sellers’ enthusiasm over the virtues of his “ Oriental Optical Lintment” was par- alleied by the overween!ng confidence «ls- | played by the witness Webster before the Committee on the Expenditures of the War Department yesterday in the efficacy of his “Patent moth exterminator.” The extraor- dinary manner in which his testimony was given certainly imparted to it no additional Weight. In reference to his accusation against General M. C. Meigs, It is hardly necessary to say, in @ community where General M. is so well and so favorably known, that it is wholly unworthy of cre- dence, and believe the committee will take the same view of the subject. General Meigs bas been long and honorably con- nected with the army; for years he superin- tended the ereetion of the Capitol building; he was the architect of the aqueduct; and subsequently Quartermaster General of the Army. In these responsible positions he has been intrusted with the disbursement of millions of dollars, and it is bat simple jus- Uce to say that not even a whisper affecting his integrity has ever been heard. As an | officer with an unblemished record, and as a | gentleman of unusual scientific attainments, | General Meigs enjoys the confidences and respect not only of the community in which he resides, but of his brother officers of the | army. | —-+<re-__ i The Boston Globe thinks Mr. Blaine the | busiest man in the country these days ran- | ning single-handed the minority in the House, nagging the majority, looking after chores at home tn Maine, watching his com- petitors in the Presidential race and chuck- | ing obstacles in their path. The Spriagfield Republican wonders “if he hasn’t pit off more | than he can chaw,” but the gentleman from | Maine seldom makes a mistake of that kind, | and always “calculates his distance,” as did the back woodsman who amused himself by Squirting tobacco julee within an inch of | the head of Martin Chuzzlewit when he was dying il in “Eden.” | ———- ore -____ Our imperial visitor from Brazil, Dom Pedro, is rapidly nearing our shores, and in ten or twelve days will land in New York, where arrangements have been made to give bim a fitting reception. His high char- acter and scholarly attainments, his excel- tent record as a ruler, and floally his friend. rhip to the United States, entitle him to a warm greeting from North Americans. Itis now Stated that on his arrival in New York hewill makea flying visit to San Fran- ‘cisco, but will return in time for the open- ing of the Centennial Exhibition. The pres- ence of “a real Emperor” on this occasion Will, of cou.se, add much interest to the acene. —_-«ee-- ROGERS, UMBBBLLA A PARASOL MAKER | AND kEPAIGER.? } 426 thn erect. steve Pa. av. eS eres oS ~ 88620" 123 CENT SPRING rh: B AT 6\c. of new SPRING ‘We cier shout 700 yards sake iat fal at Ibs conte.
