Youna. day of April, A_D. 1576. Joun T. C. Clark, J. P. ————-- e+e- Visit From a School-Beok Augel. While we were occupied to-day over look. | ing the reports from twenty or thirty of the investigating committees now in session personage of benign aspect entered and in- | troduced himself pleasant!y as one of the “school book fiends” denounced lately by | THE Star. Now we had never seen a School-book fiend, thrugh we had often beard of them, and busy as we were we turned to look at him. He was aman, or Perhaps we should say a ncing, of stately | Proportions, a noble brow of the Poe ampli- tude, and a face in which sensibility, benev- olence and dignity seemed to struzzie for | mastery, or rather to combine to make a perfect whole. His dress was in keeping. ‘The coat, hat and gloves were blac‘, which, | with a certain wistful peusiveness of counte- SEAL. mance, seemed to indicate a stat? of mourn- ing over the fallen condition of the worid | under the influence of bad ‘hool books; while at the saine time his v. were of a more cheerful hue, 2s if to inspt hope, that, through the totrotact! of hia | superior €lect series of books ligut might be | turown into all the dark corners of theearth, bet and sin and besotted ignorance ban: under the mus Influence of his spe! and gographies. He banded us his “Thaddeus Burkett. Eclectic Educat Series; Wilson, Hinckic & Co., Pablishers.” | It, too, was in keeping; black lettering, ind!- | cating grief; pink paper and red-line border | suggesting hope. Then hespoxe. What j ness in the voice! A tenor of surpassiag Sweetness and pathos that had a Sankey like effectiveness, swelling with a wailing pathos as he dilated upon the awful condition Of the lost ones who never kuew the Eclectic Series, and changing to an exstatic peal of triumph as he described the bliss of a world redeemed from the Cornell Geography, the | Franklin Reader, Davies Arithmetic, ani | the Worcester Spelier. Prejutice and ia credulity melted like snow under that win- ning voice. He demonstrated not only the immeasureable superiority of the Eclectic Series (Wilson, Hinckle & Co-, publishers, over all other school books preseut or possi- ble, but he established by a process of reason- ing which seemed conclusive at the time, but which we now find ourselves rather at a loss t@explain, that not only would the change to the Eclectic Series be effected without cost to parents, but that it would absolutely put money in their pockets. It was some- thing like this: You assume in the first | Place that school books are never used more | than one year—parents being always flush | of money will not condescend to allow their children to use second-hand book: id con- sequently every year the books on hand are thrown away and new ones purchased. This being the case when these new ones are | bought, all you have to do 1s to slip in the Eclective Series at the reduced “introduc- on price” In place of those now authorized, and there you are! The inquiry came up to the mind whether the school-books are all | thrown away, and new books purchased every school year; whether, as a matter of fact, In these hard times, and in any other times, a good many parents do not find it necessary to practise economy, and to re- quire their children to keep their books in good condition so that they may be used ia turn by the younger ones, and thus do guod service for years. That there is a brisk trade im second-hand school-books would seem to indicate, too, that they are not all thrown away after one years use. Then again the upregenerate spirit of scepticism would insist upon prompting the suggestion that if there ts such a gain by getting new series of books at “introduction prices,” which | low prices last for three months only; whether the argument would not hold gooi in favor of cuauging school books every | quarter, in which case the Eclectic series, if | intreduced, would have to make its exit in | nimety days for somebody else's cheap ‘“Ia- troduction price” series. Other inquiries of | the same (absurd, of course) nature, pre- sented themselves to the mind, but died on the tongue, under the influence of that irre- sistible voice and that ineffable smile. As | he wenton hour after hour telling of the | merits of his books, and how communities bad risen and prospered through the use of the Ecletic series, and how nationalities had foundered through not using them, people | coming into the office stopped spell- bound. Mere common book agent: drumming for subscription-published work: paused as in the presence of a master. Whole delegations of ladies essaying to swindle Tue STAR out of @ puff of unadver- Used church fairs, and charity entertain- ments to provide flannels for the Hottentots, joined the charmed circle of pupils at the feet of this great artist in persuasion. Two or Wree hundred people, male and female, who want to contribute for THE STAR at the Centennial, also joined the class. Others of the style who visit newspaper offices and favor the eiitor with their views upon all sorts of matters, regardless of time or wind, paid thelr tribute to the silver-tongued speaker in the sameway. And this is the benignant Belpg we called a school-bo0k Perish the epithet! Say, rather, an angel, @ text-book angel. ———_-~ee-- ‘The shutting off of gas, water, and fuel from public buildings throughout the coun- try is a specimen of national parsimony of which no American citizen can feel proud. A patient under the infia- ence of chloroform is said to pass through four conditions or stages, the first being the Period of excitement, the second the period Of intoxication, the third that of rigidity, and the fourth that of complete effect. A strong and apparently healthy man recently died in St. Louis while in the period of rigid- was undergoing an operation for the relief of @ crushed finger, and had reached the third period when the surgeons noticad heavy stertorous breathing, under manifestly great effort on the part of the patient. The anws- thetic was at once withdrawn and all the &ppliances to produce artificial respiration brought into play, but death soon ensued. As the surgeons were of high standing and of long experience, and as they administered the dangerous drug with great care, they are puzzled to understand the fatal result in the case. A post mortem examination in the in- terest of science would doubtless throw light on the subject.
