For the benefit of advertisers who desire the widest possible publicity for their bast- ness announcements, at the least cost In money, we publish the foliowing figures and appended affidavits: Date. No. of copies. 15,197 15,000 | 15,45 District Jobn Dice, Pressman for The FE: Newspaper Company, having been first duly of Columina, Washington o—<—.= oe vening oa sworn, deposes and says: That the figures e given are correctly stated; that they , represent the number of copies of THE EVEN ING Stak printed and delivered from tne press room on the days named to supply the current and ordinary demand therefor, and that, to the best of his knowledge and belief, all of said number of copies were actually sold and circulated as the usual and regular Cally issues of said paper. Joun Dice Sworn and subscribed before me this 3d ¢ay of April, A. [> 1576. Joun T. C. CLARK, J. P. [SEAL] Samuei Young, Casbier of The Evening Star Newspaper Company, being first duly Sworn, deposes and says: That the figures above given are correctly stated; that they representonly the regular and bona fide cireu- jation of Tue EVENING STAR newspaper on the daysand dates named, and that no copies ‘were printed or furnished for gratuitous cir- culation, or on account of any fictitious, tr- regular, or extraordinary orders, or for any other purpose than to supply the current ani average pablic demand for said EyENING d further, that all of said copies were actually sold and circulated in the un!- form and usual course of business. Sauce G Sworn and Subseribed befu: day of Ap pril, # Youre me this si | The House Elephant ‘There is a disposition abroad to ind in unseemly levity over the predicament of the democratic House with €lephant on hand as such a@ costly their distinguished state prisoner, Hallet Kilbourn. Thus far | theybave not been able to get a thing from | him, while he, luxuriating in his prison quarters in a state of torpid gorgeousness, | is literally eating them out of house and home. The Graphic remarks about it “The bill for what he bas eaten thus far Is nearly $300, so that Congress seems to be nourishing @ sort of Gargantua who will compiacently stay where he ts until he shall have eaten the value of half the real estate | in Washington and a new bridge across the | Potomac. When the pation shall ba bank- | rupted in this way It is difficult to see what | good will come of having the books that are | Low so ardently desired. Ten to one they | contain nothing but a shameless collectio? Of bills of tare, rece!pts for the concoction of | rare dishes, selections from the works of | Soyer and Francatelli, and poetical excerpts in praise of the table. Since the great man’s | incarceration he has eaten of green peas, | spring chickens, cucumbers and straw- berries, at the rate of about $30a day, which is certainly creditable to him, and utterly sproves the charge recently made by the | durdoy Review, that Americans are sordid in their living. Thirty dollars a day should | Pay for at least two bushels of peas, five spring chickens, two dozen cucumbers, and five strawberries, at the current price, and | yet leave mosey enough to purchase three hotties of wine and a French roll or two. But while Mr. Kilbourn is thus enlarging the phylacteries of his digestive apparatus | the Treasury is becoming poorer day by day, and as the bm vivan’ and his expenses grow by what they feed on, it is easy to - hat unless the gentleman «< peedily leased the commissary department must zo by the board and the nation plunged in free trievable ruin. Unless Con bas some <eep scheme of feeding our Gargantua till he loses bis grip on literature, becomes weak in intellect, and finally consents to give up his hooks rather than become & /oi grers, it would be policy to release him at once, and do What can be done without bim.” The mystery is how Halict gets away with all these eatables. He is by no means a Gargantua in size, but of mediom height, compact build, a Napoleonic head, goot chest, but very moderate abdominal devel- opment. Amongst his friends he passes as rather a light eater, though he likes every. thing good of its kind. Perhaps the bracing air of the Anacostia has developed his appe- Ute, or perhaps having nothing else to do uOw but eat, he pays attention to it. But most likely this deep and dangerous man is following out a deliberate policy to eat up the democratic chances of national success by involving the House in an abyss of ex- penditure that will make it utterly imposst- ble for them to go before the country as the party of retrenchment and reform. — The Cont! —— = the Jail Nais- A large number ot a lesting citizens of the District, 2nd owxers of property in the vicin- ity of Judiciary Square, have sent a petition to the President asking that he return with- out his approval “Senate bill No. 682,” and which turns over to the authorities of the District the old jatl building. They urge With great force the objections to the re- establishment of this detestable nuisance, and blight to all that part of the city. It Is sincerely to be hoped that the President will listen to the appeal ef these estimable citi- zens, and decline to permit this wretched old buiiding, which has repeatedly been con- «wemned by our grand jaries, to farther cam- ber the ground it oceupies so > detrimentally. The District Commissioners’ Answer. The answer sent to the House District Committee by the District Commissione: will be read attentively not only by the tax- payers of the District, but by many persons elsewhere whose interest bas been attracted by the charges of mismanagement of local affairs at the national capital. To the Inves- Ugating Committee the Commissiorers owe the only opportunity they have ever had of vindicating their administration, their an- nual report being limited by law to incom- Piete statements. Their ‘‘answer" Is a con- elusive refutation of many slanders circu- lated, and makes a record consistent with the bigh reputation for ability and integrity they bore when they first came among us. Every current debt of the l}istrict has been paid at maturity; leaks have been stopped, and the municipal machinery simpiified. Although the number of officials has been reduced from 37! to 133 (a diminution of 233), the business has been well attended to; and the frances have been bettered by an econ- omy of $200,589.80 per annum on the salaries of officers and employes. This is not only stated, but proved. The economy is greater than the interest on all the 3-65 bonds issued.
