’ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: _MONDAY s- April 3, § CROSBY S. NOYES........Editoi CIRCULATION OF THE STAR. Sworn Statement. | For the benefit of advertisers who desire the widest possible publicity for their basi- ness announcements, at the least cost tn money, we publish the foliowing figures and appended affidavits 5,826 District ¢f Cohumtaa, Washington County, ss. i Dice, Pressman for eee | ews} — Company, having been first duly “a cod says: That the figures Above given are correctly stated: that they | represent the number of copies of THE EVEN- | ING Stak printed and delivered from the press room on the days name to supply the current and ordinary demand therefor, and | that, to the best of his knowledge and belief, all of said number of copies were actually sold and circulated as the usua! and regular | cally issuesofsaid paper. Joun Dice Sworn and subscribed before me this Jd ay of April. A.D. ee Joun T. C. CLARK, J. P. [Skat] Samuel G. Young, Cashier of The Evening Btar Newspaper Company, being first duly Sworn, deposes and says: That the figures above given are correctly stated; that they the regular and bona firle cired- EVENING STAR newspaper on the days and dates named, and thatuo copies were printed Or furnished for gratuitous cir- culation, or on account of any fictitions, ir- regular, or extraordinary orders, or for @ny other purpose than to supply the current ant average public demand for said EVENING STAR; and further, that ali of said copies Were actually sold and circulated in the ual- form and usual course of business. - Samvgi G. Youna. Sworn and subscribed before me this 34 | Gay of April, A. D. 18 ‘oun T. C. CLARK, J. P. (SEAL. | ———~ere. A private dispateh received here last night | from Matamoras, Mexico, stated that Diaz | had occupied the town, and that General | Labarra and many other federal officers had | fied to Brownsville, Texas. Senor Mariscal, the Mexican Minister, upon being inter- | Togated to day as to his opinion of the im. | portance and character of the uprising, stated that he thought it merely of local in- terest and importance, and that it would bave no serious effect upon the Republic, With the exception of the scandal and dam. | aging rumors that would necessarily be set | &float. Diaz, he says, is simply at the head | Of @ set of desperadoes from both sides of the | river. The Mexicans who support him are mainly the friends and supporters of Gene- ral Cortinas, wno is imprisoned in the city of Mexico, and are, of course, ready to en- gage in anything that will tend to effect his | release, or that will give them something to | ¢o; while his Texan allies are always ready | to engage in anything, provided there is | shooting in it. | Our press dispatches to-day show that | Matamoras fell becqpse of the treachery of the government troops. If o' garrisons | are not more trutsworthy the revolation may | prove to be more formidable thau the Min- | ister thinks. -20-- As stated in THE St4R, Representative | Cox presented @ petition in favorof woman suilrage in the Houseon Friday last. Pre- viously ia conversation with a female ad- Yocate of equal political rights Mr. Cox stated that he was not in favor of woman | suffrage, but his wife was. ‘Then, sir,” was the quick reply, “ Youdo not represent your wife!” The witty Representative from New York was nonplussed foroxce and prom- ised that be would try to have the petition printed in the Record at any rate. He re- deemed his promise as the Xecord of Satur- day shows. wage Actual experiments show that the ventila~ tion of railroad cars is seriously defective, especially in cold weather, and various reme- dies have been suggested. Tne Railroad Ga- tetie proposes a simple plan, which has been tried and indorsed by the superintendent of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac railroad. It consists in simply raising the front window next to the stove and letting down the blind. The Gazette argues that by doing this a plentiful supply of air will enter under ordinary circumstances, and that this current of cold alr going upward and ming- ling with the hot air ascending from the stove, becomes modified In temperature so that the passengers experience no discomfort from the ingress of the life-giving atmos- phere. This plan possesses the merits of simplicity and cheapness, and may be par- tally efficacious in purifying the atmos- phere of cars. Now let some one discover a way to rid passengers of the annoyance of the shower of cinders which sifts through the open windows in warm weather. Sev- eral remedies have been suggested, but none of them seem to meet the favor of the rail- Toad companies. Brother Moody, the revivalist, it would seem, takes for his model St. Paul, who once upon a time remarked that it was a sbame for a woman to speak in the churel:. He was asked in open meeting the other day what he thought of women preachers, and replied: “Well, that is a nice point; but I ‘would not like my wife to go about preach- ing.” There is a difference of opinion on this question. Women have frequently been Very successful as revivalists, and would ‘Mr. Moody have them !remain passive when they are capable of doing as much good as many of ype sterner sex? Mr. Moody might not like To see his wife in the pulpit, but would he object to seeing any one else’s wife turn preacher? R. 8. Spofford, the ‘Congressional Libra- rian, has altered @ familiar quotation to read ‘That burn whence no traveler re- vurns.” This ar we fear, will not have a Universalist applleation.—(Chicago Tri- dune. The Tribune confounds Richard 8S. Spof- ford (who married Miss Prescott, of literary renown) with Ainsworth R. Spofford, the Librarian of Congress. One comes from Newburyport, the other from Cincinnati. Both know a geod deal about books, but what the latter doesn’t know about them aes wee eee Consul Wilson, stationed at Matamoras, deserves the special recognition of the gov- ernment for his efforts in behalf of citizens of the United States whom the Mexican General Labarra arrested and imprisoned for refusing to pay the assessments upon them, and especially for bis rescue of one of our citizens who had been placed on the ‘wail of the defences of Matamoras and would ave been Killed in case ofan attack from the reyolutionists. Our representatives abroad are frequently so indifferent In the case of outrages upon our citizens in foreign coua- tries that Consul Wilson’s action seems ex- ceptionably commendabie. £. = PR ATTORNEY.-AT Lat, oribesst cor.
