As a majority of ali the votes polled is required to elect in New Hamp- shire, there is frequently no cholce by the People. This was the result of the vottag in 1875, and also in Is. Last year the candi. date of the protibitionists bad 773 support- ers, and therefore caused the election to fall to the legislature. Weston’s fourth and last appear- ance in London was to be an attempt (com- mencing March 6,) to walk 500 miles in six consecutive days. The interest felt in his exploits is illustrated by the fact that ten thousand people were In attendance on his jJast appearance, and a London paper speaks of It as “@ wonderful performance, and add- ing to the proof already given of the mar- vellous stamina of the pedestrian.” Weston may do to beat the Britishers, but we have Wwalkists at home who have beaten Weston. ‘When we sead them over the water John Bull may experience another sensation. ——_—_- e+e --___ The Chicago Tribune suggests, in a dispas- sionate way, that Mr. Hiester Clymer nai better stop raiding upon the newspaper cor- respondents and go ahead with the investi- gation in the Pendleton case, “which was ot pursued as it ought to have been.” ———ee-__ Mr. Morton’s bill providing for the election of Presid ent and Vice President by a direct vote of the people may be open to criticism, but the underlying principle is doubtiess en- | dorsed by the people pretty generally. The existence of the republic to-day is attributa- | ble to the prompt acquiescence of the minor- | ity in the will of the majority, but the pres- | ent cumbrous system of electing the President and Vice President sometimes operates to | fet at defiance the will of the majority, and | ,¢; is by bo means a fair ex: jon of the will of the people.
