_EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON: THIPSDAY March 9, 1876. | ~~ ermer LATION OF THE STA Monday, February BE Res is} Tuesday, “ 14,500 | Wednesday, March 1 1. 14,500 ‘Thursday, 15,04) | Friday, 15,375 Saturday, = 16,300 | | Average Daily Circulation........15, | The attention of advertisers and of the pub- Me generally is invit~1 to the above showing | Of the cireulation of THe Stan for last week. | ‘This is the highest averages weekly circula- | Bion ever reached by this peper, and, it is Bafe tosay, more than three times as great @s thatof any otherdally paper ever pubd- ished In Washington. Tnese figures, in con- nection with the well-known fact that it ts | taken and thoroughly read by all classes, and, indeed by almost every family in the District of Columbia, show more empuati- @ally than can be expressed in words the ‘Value of THE STAR as an advertising me dium. In this respect it is literally witnout @n equal, and no other paper comes any where pear it. Mr. Pinehback, of Louisiana, who danced attendance on the sessions of the Senate for ‘tbree years, and during that time learned to Jabor and to wait. has finally been denied Sdmission to that body by a vote of % to 2. Five Senators who would have voted for his @dmission were patret with five other Sena- tors who would have voted against it. Had they been present and voted the result Would have been virtually the same, or 31 in Yavor and 37 against bis admission. Mr. Ro- bertson, independent republican, deciined to Vote, and General Burnside, who was ab- Sent, would have voted for Pinchback’s ad- Mission. Had both of these Senators voted in favor of the claimant, aud had the patred Benators recordei their votes the result ‘Would havo been 36in favor of admission | aud 3 against it. Tae gountry will be re- | Joiced to hear that the case has been fiaally | Settled. For three years past it has occupled Zauch of the valuavle time of the Senate, Bnd the discussions have resulted in nothing | xcept the expressions of opinion by a ma- | Jority of that boly that the election which chose the legislature electing Pinchdack ‘Was & stupendous frand. The result, how- | ever, is a cheering indication that the time is coming when our natioual legislators will | court honest convictions of duty as having claims upon them far superior to those of | party. Eight republican Senators were | found to oppose the admission of Pinch. back, and it would be preposterous to sup- | pose that gentlemen like Coristiancy, Ed- munds, the two Morrills, Wadleigh and Others, voting against Pineaback, were in- | Hiuenced by any but the highest considera- Uons of duty. It would be just as absurd to Suppose that the question of color infuenced their feclings in the matter, since none of them demurred at the admission of the col- | ored Senator from Mississippi | Judge Taft, the new Secretiry .W ‘ar, was | Promptly covfirme: by t rate yester- day. The appoint veg yal satisfaction. The Ne ay Post ama: and in- | bis own state, and says that while he is yet tobe tried in a pro: nt federal | Position, there ts the be a to belleve | that he will perform his duties with lateg- Rity and fidelity. In the opinion of the Richmond Dispatch it is unfortunate for the democrats that the Watioval Corvention of the party is to be heid in St. Louis. The nomination of Sey- mour and Blair, that paper says, could mever have been effected anywhere outside Of New York city. Tnatnomination doomed the democrats to defeat not only in 1868, bat in The delegates to the New York ational Convention could not separate themselves from their surroundings. The city was a vast populace of democrats. The | Fesult was—first unbounded confidence in tneir ability to elect anybody that might be nominated; secondly, a death struggle for the pomination between the friends of the vari- Us candidates; and thirdly, as @ consequence the nomination of two meu who were totally unfit to lead the party in a heated political campaign. The Lispa‘ch adds: # We would fain oes ay no such result will cllow the selection of St. Louis as the Seat of ue National Convention. But whea we see how Uuwisely a House of Rep- Tesentatives, two-thirds of whose members a@redemocrats, has acted from the first Mon- y in last December until now, we are pprebersive that some unanticipated fol- ike Will be mantiested at St. Louis. A very intelligent gentleman of this city fears that two ieadiig democrats have by their perches in the national House of Represen- tatives driven off five hundred thousand ‘Voters In the north from the democratic party. Let such ‘leaders’ congregate to- gether in St. Louis, and, warmed by southera #y wpathizers and northern ——- under- take to ‘spread themselves,’ and there is no telirg wheat mlechief oben will do.” Norman \ Wiard tame up in ‘San!
