Commercial, is not much of @ president-maker, but he is something of @ joker. One of bis latest at- ‘tempts upon the risibles is the grave as- sertion that the movement to hold the re- Publican convention elsewhere than in Cin- cinnati is not owing to the exrortionate prices charged by the hotel keepers there, but is merely @ trick by Morton and Blaine to Lave the convention held where they can get more lccal pressure in their faver than in Cincinnati. The truth is that the proposed change was altogether suggested by the an- Swers received from Cincinnati hotel keepers to inquiries as to the prices to be paid there. ItWas manifested by these answers that the hotel keepers of Cincipnati had combined to bleea the visitors in the most outrageous manner; beyond the most ucblushing charges of any landlord leeches in any city at any previous national convention. We gave in TH © STAR the other day the answer of the proprietors of the Gibson House to an inquiry from a gentleman of this city &@s to the prices at which he could secure rooms. They said: “Our prices for parlor aud bed room attached are as foliows: First, Second, aod third floor, #33 aday fer parlor | and bed room suitable for two persons; back | Toom on same floor, $16. a day; fourth and fifth floors, #23aday. Ifyou wish to engage Tooms, piease notify at your earliest conve- nience.” These prices are treble the usual | ratesof the hotel. On the representation of this fact to the chairman of the national re- Publican committee, he at once took steps, Which are now being considered, to have the Place for the assembling of the convention changed from Cincinnati to some place Where the hotel accommodations are more ample or the hotel men less greedy than in that city. The Cincinnati hotel men seem to show some alarm lest they may have over reached themselves by their greed, and they may decide to come down in prices to not more thai double their usual rates. But they | should be required to sign a definite agree- | ment as to prices before the conveation and the attendant visitors are remitted to their javenous clutches. An Outside View of Our Greenback Depreciation, The Westminster Review, the most friendly IMMENSE BARGAINS AT Of the British quarterlies to America and Americans, has in its current (January) | number an elaborate articte npon «Foreign | Loans and National Debts,” in which ¢. siderable attention is given to onr financial condition. The opinion is expressed that we are trying to pay off our immense war debt | too fast, and that though the efforts by which @ reduction has been made of £113,900,000 in ten years on that debt are most praiseworthy. yet the object has been effected by a se- verity of taxation and a mistaken system of imposts that have crippied many branches of industry. “It is strange,” the writer thinks, «to that this people, so proud of its position among the nations, and so aux- ious to relieve itself from debt, and every- thing that the condition of debt implies, should suffer themselves to be reproachet with the existence among them of a paper currency ten years after the close of the civil war.” He continues with some remarks upou the general subject in the following iutelli- gent strar “A bank note or a treasury note is but a promise to pay 3 amount of , and in any well-ordered sy: finance there should be practically sufficient coin or bullica to meet these promises. our mind, there is no valid excuse for all ing the cy ee mises to pay to be at a discount a day longer than is absolutely pecessary. The only possible gain to a na- tion—and it is only @ material one—is the annual interest saved on the bullion, which dispensed with by the over-issue; but pgainst this is to be set the moral element of uncertainty, and almost of gambling, whic is imporied Into every monetary transac: the manipulations of gold-ri and evils which spring from ‘artif lity. ler it a reproach, therefore, tooar transatlantic cousins that'ten years after the close of their civil war their promises to pay bn demand can be bought at 13 per cent. dis- count.
