EVENING STAR. ,ASHINGTON: THURSDAY.....Febranry 17, 1876 CROSBY 8S NOYES. Editor. Ree Circulation Hore than Three | Times that of any other Daily Pa-— per published in Washington, and therefore by far the Best Adver- + tising Medium im the District of The vote in the Senate yesterday on taking up the Pinchback resolution was in some sense @ test one since the friends of Mr. Pinehback, with one exceptios, ba! for pra- dential reasons, concluded uot to bring up the resolution at all this week. The yeas on the motion to take up were 59, including every democrat present, and at least twa re- publicans, viz., Messrs. Booth and E.imands, Who Will vote against Pincbback’s admis- sion, and the noes 33 which included several republicans who rumor had said, would also Vote against Pinchback. It is known, how- ever, that Mr. West, who vote! with the democrats yesteriay, will vote for Mr. Pincback’s admission. Assuming that this Was, with the exception of Mr. West's vote, @ test vote, Mr. Morton's original resolation ‘Will have on a final vote the additional sup- port of Messrs. Anthony, Burnside, Cragin, Ferry anc Mitchell, who were absent yester- day,or 59 in ali. Messrs. Christiancy, Gor- don, Kelly, and possibly Robertson, who were absent yesterday, will oppose the reso- tion, making their total vote 33, or a majori- ty for the “claimant” of six. It is just possi- ble, however, that several of the republican Senators who voted against taking up the resolution yesterday did so in deference to the wishes of @ brother Senator (Mr. Miteh- ell) Who was sick and had asked fora post Pponement of the subject until he could be present, and that they will, whea the direct question comes up, Vote against Mr. Mor- ton’s resolution. ——<$<.0e-+—___ The Congressional investigation of the Board of Audit is certainly developing some Pretty high-handed rascality on the part of the Board, or at any rate of the employes of the Auditors. And that Messrs. Tayler and Brodhead gave so little personal attention to the duties of their trust as to allow such frauds to be committed under the auspices of the Board Is no ways creditable to them as officials, however clean-handed they may be Fersorally. —_—___-«+e-____ If the latest news from Spain may be reliad on, Don Carios will find his Sedan at Tolosa, tor near which point, at last accounts, he ‘was encompassed by the forces of King Al- fonso. The government forces have lately achieved a series of important victories, Oriving the Carlists northward until now the latter are concentrated fora final strug- Ble at Tolosa, capital of Gurpuzcoa, a pro- vince In the northern part of Spain, border- ing on France. Tolosais @ wallet city of five or six thousand Inhabitants, situated at the footof the Pyrenees. Judging from the confidence of the government, its troops will soon enter Tolosa and free the railway and establish communication with Metrid. Tae fact that a dispatch from Vienna states that toe relatives of Don Carlos look for his re- turn to that city shortly strengthens the im- préssion that he soon expects to find his “last ditch.” ——_—__ee--_____ Of all the possible Presidential candidates Mr. Blaine’s name presents the best chance for the rbymsters. We have among the moucsyliables alone, sane, plain, Daue, deige, gain, grain, rain reign, vein, Spain, Maine, main, mane, seine, cane, lane, &c. ‘The versifiers have wrought themselves into an agonizing frenzy in finding rhymes for Conkling. Messrs. Morton, Thurman, Bay- ard, Hendricks, Tilden, and Hancock, nesdn’t bave much fear that their names will be tampered with in this manner. ———_— ae The appropriate committe: of the Mary- land legislature heard arguments last nigot against the proposition to levy a tax on every ton of coal mined. The irjustice of such a law has already beenshown by many Of the Maryland papers, which have pointed out the fact that the people and not the coal companies would feel the oppressiveness of such a law in the increased price of coal, and that it would open the way for tue com- petition of coal interests outside of the state. General Butle Butler's “Duteh Gap canal,” on account of which he suffered so much rail. Jery, was after alla blessing in disguise to the commerce of the James. The Richmont Dispatch says the work of enlarging it has nearly been completed, and that hereafter there will be between 18 and 21 feet of water in the cut, so that the largest vessels may pass through. The cat-off saves seven miles between Richmond and the sea. ———_—__-<«e-____ A member of the Maryland legislature Proposes to deal vigorously with the doz question. He has submitted a bill provid- ing for a license for ali dogs, and also pro- Viding that every one failing to pay such Heense shall be disfranchise4 o-——_—_—_— The “boy: ere rather hard up for news on Tuesday night, and as usual in such ex- tremes they telegraphed abroad ali t1 par- Ueulars of another “Cabinet rupture a important contemplated Cabin Blaine stock seems to be rising in the west.
