The fom apr bymn, “Lo! the loving Jesus | Slgndeth,” to the tune, “Hold the fort,” was preceded by the touching story of a Ter in Harrisburg, who, when he learned that It was the governor who had prayed with him and departed, sald:—" Why didn’t you tell me it was the goveruor? His pardon would have saved me.” Mr. H. offered & short request asking for a further knowledge of prevailing prayer, and then spoke of the necessity of feeding faith upon lhe promises, and gave some interesting illustrations. He then read from the 16th ebapter of Jobn, and spoke upon the fifth condition of prevailing prayer—‘in Jesus’ Resolutions were uvanimously adopted “requesting the republican Senators and members of the House to cailon John R. French, the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate, and Edward Clark, architect of the Capitol, (both of whom have for a long time been eating the best wheat tn the republican crib), to answer why they have seiected and turned out five faithful colored policemen (at the Capito!) to starve at mid-winter, and al- lowed thetr places to be filled with demo- crats or unreconstructed rebels,” and de- tmanding “the removal of Messrs. French and Clark, unless they can show good cause for their action, or restore these men to fire to warm the me”—and called especial attention to the words, “Verily, I say unto you, whatsoever ye ask the Father in my name, He will giva it you,” and drew some striking illustrations from practical life. An opportunity was then given for short prayers. Mr. Hammond told the congregation that it was no Inter- Tuption for a person to come or go during the services, and then asked for FIVE PRAYERS IN FIVE MINUTES. “What shall the Harvest be” was sung by Mr. Bentley. The meeting was then opened for any on€ to speak orpray. A young man spoke of nis past life, how that for years he bad been a drunkard, but was finally con- verted. Rev.G. A. Hobbs, of Grace M. E. Chureh, followed with prayer. Kev. Dr. Ran- kin spoke of a college friend who married and settled in the west, and there became the victim of intoxication. His wife had written to the speaker in the depths of her misery, some three weeks since, and at a lit- tle meeting then being heid at his chureh they knelt down and prayed for her relief. He then read a letter showing the change for good that bad come over his old college friend, and at his solicitation the meeting of- fered Up another prayer for his coutinuance in Improving. The meeting then resolved itself into A PRAISE MEETING, Mr. Bentley leading, “We'll Praise Thee, Ob! God,” and maxy arose, or through the ministers, thanked Ged for some blessing. Mr. Hammond read the requests for prayer, the congregation being engaged meauwhile nsilent prayer. Mr. Hammond closel this meeting with prayer, and the congre gation then engaged in singing. A Project whieb All are Interested. It will nodoubt startle many of our good citizens to know that while they are sleep- ing comfortably 3 warm beds these cold, bi are scores of men, wom nm wandering about ¥ inhospitable streets without finding a place to rest their weary heads or a generous ir nearly frozen bodies. Yet r police station-houses are holly inadequate to the demands of this kind made tpon them. Many of them have not the simplest accommodations for night lodgers—not even chairs sufficient for them to sit upon, and if they wish to liedown,a bard, bare floor is their only couch Last month the police accommodated in this miserable way on an average sixty-six &@ night, and this month the applications are still more numerous. Some, it is true, are “tramps,” “bummers” and “dead beats,” itisevenso. ¢ but the largemajority are decent, respecta- ble people who have Been thrown out of em- pcx ment during the present depression in usiness, and have never before known any- thing of the biting necessities of life. They remain huddled together in the raliroad sta- tions until the lights are put out and the doors closed, and then begin their sufferings, which can not be told in words! To supply the t peed of such sufferers was the happy thought of a few young ladies attending one of our private schools, who, warmly seconded by thelr principal, gave an entertainment recently which realized over two hundred dollars. This has been supple- mented by donations of several hundred dol- jars from our generous citizens, and a suit- able building will be at once secured for the purpose of establishing a night lodging house upen a firm basis. A meeting of those interested will be called at an early day,and in the mean time we invite the benevolent to send contributions to Messrs. John T. Mitchell or A. 8. Solo- mons. We may add that it is contem- plated not tosend adrift the lodgers hungry in the morning, but to give them a comfort- able breakfast, which mayhap some of our hotel proprietors will be willing to supply from the surplusage of their overstocked tables. Major Richards has promised his cordial co-operation to assist in the good Work and prevent the managers from being imposed upon by unworthy persons.
