The total expenditures for school purposes for the year ending September 3th last amounted to $1,640,047.77, being an increase in 1575 as com- pared with the previous year of $110. 5. Of the total expenditures $199,009 went to Schools for colored children. The xumber of pupils increased from 64,739 in 1366, to 100,414 in 1575, being an increase of nearly 55 Percent. in ten years. Steady progress at this rate will soon place Maryland on a par With the most favored states as respects e@cucational privileges. Madca —$—————— The “Congressional nosegay” question seems to be exciting considerable attention since the recent publication in Tae Srar relative to the distribution of bouquets from the Botanical Gardens. The New York Bvening Post thinks the allowance of seven Bouquets for the House and three for the Senate daily is rather small, but that “it must be remembered that members of Con- gress have a large supply of pen-knives, brushes, combs, and other miscellaneous ar- Ucles from which they can draw without restriction, and the thought suggests itself ‘that they can exchange some of these things, for all of which they can find no personal use, with the city florists for extra bouquets. ‘Thus,” says the Post, “may their button boles be provided for and the government's demand notes be paid.” The Baltimore Sun is also exercised over the nosegay business, and exclaims, with reference to Congress- men, “if their compensation is not sufficient Jet it be made so, that there may be no ex- use for their helping themselves to extras, @nd becoming transformed from representa. tives of the people into sybarites, who ex- pecta government to minister to their vol- uptuousness as well as necessities.” It strikes us that there are more legitimate Subjects of criticism than the distribution of floral favors among our national law-givers. ‘Members of Congress are perhaps better en- Utled to these bouquets than any one else, Since the Botanic Gardens are supported by Congressional appropriations. in point of Value these gardens are far superior to any in the country, and, besides being one of the maost attractive features of the national cap- ital, furnish unsurpassed facilities to the student of botany.
