EVENING STAR. yASHINGTON Bq Circulation More than Three Times that of any other Daily Pa- Ber published in Washington, and therefore by far the Best Adver- tising Medium in the District of ‘The Wicked City of Philadelphia on the Anxious Seat. We see by the Philadelphia Star that Mr. Moody considers the revival In that city the most successful he has yet been instru- mental tn effecting. It has now lasted elght weeks. During the third and fourth weeks there was @ falling off in the attendance. Curiosity was measurably sated, and if the Work had taken no real hold upon the re- ligious feelings of the people the audiences Would have continued todiminish. On the contrary, they soon began to increase in numbers and fervor, until the great building Was again inadequate to hold the throng. It is estimated that not less than 900,000 peo- ple have attended the services at the rink, and the belief is expressed that “no orator, religious or secular, ever addressed so many persons in an equal length of time.” ‘This is very encouraging and satisfactory, 80 far, and we shall watch.with no little interest to see if this great awakening shall result in salutary fruits. When election time comes round we shall have an op- portunity to judge of the matter. Philatel- phia has a sad name for cheating on election day, and if the labors of Moody and Sankey make @ reform in this particular they will have effected a great work. We shall expect, too, to see the Philadelphians wake up under the teactings of Moody and Sankey to the enormity of their bad pavements. These Wretched, rough and dirty pavements are a continua! stum biock in the way of souls needing to be saved, inciting as they do to grievous profanity and other reckless and soul-d:stroying cou Let us hope to see practical fruits meet for repentance grow out of the great revival movement iu Polladelpbia. -e-—_____. The public is warned against a swindler Who is collecting money in the country near ‘Washington by way of subscriptions iu a/- vance for THE STAR. This person—and there my be more than one—has been operating at various points—in the vicinity of Bright- Wood, in Uniontown, and now we have a Bote from 4 correspondent at Silver Hill, Md., saying that“an agent pretending to be fro! pr Office has been all through the Silv Ul neighborhood obtaining subseri- bers for your paper.” We have to say that Wwe have no such agent employed, and that ‘We shall feel greatly obliged to any one who Wil put the police of the neighborhood on his track, and will at the same time furnisu Us With such description of the maa as will ensbie us to co-operate in the work of bring- ing him to justice. | ‘Washington is not the only city which suf- fers from the impositions of gas companies. In proof of the large profits of the gas com- panies in New York and Brooklyn a paper Of the former city says that the par value of Shares in the Manhattan Gas Compaay of New York is $50; at the latest public sale the shares brought $307.25 eaca. The par value ef shares of the Metropolitan Gas Company of New York is $100; at the latest sale they brought £159 each. In Brooklyn the par ‘Value of the shares of the Citizens’ Gas Com- pany is #20; at the last sale they brought $129. But there is a single ray of hope in the extortions of these monopolies. They will Serve to stimulate invention in the line of illuminating material, and it is by no means impossible that the time will come when the companies can be set at defiance by their Victims. Already an invention has been patented by which the gas generated by the burning of coal in ordinary stoves can be utilized and made to serve for illuminating Purposes. If this invention, which is now on exhibition In Baltimore, will work as sat- isfactorily as its author claims, it will be hailed as a public blessing. Ex.Governor Campbell, of Wyoming, bore testimony to the excellent results of ‘woman suffrage in that territory, and now a United States judge formerly located tnere reports that since women have been ad- mitted the suffrage there has been a change from the former noisy, disorderly and dis- reputable scenes to the “quiet of @yeligious meeting. He thinks that hardly a dozen men could be found in the territory to favor depriving women of the suffrage. These statements are difficult to reconcile with the report that the legislature of Wyoming will make a strenuous effort to abolish woman saffrage in the territory. —___-s6e-——_____ It is understood that the resolution intro- “duced by Mr. Randall in the House yester- day directing the District Commissioners to discontinue work of every kind on the streets, avenues, sewers, canal, alleys, and bridges in the District, did not originate with him, and was offered, as bills and resolutions fre- quentiy are, by request. As the Commis- sioners have very nearly completed the pub- Me works, and about all that remains to be done is to finish the James Creek Canal, a Work imperatively needed as a sanitary measure for the drainage of the malaria! swamps and flats within a stone’s throw of the Capito! building, it is not easy to see ex- actly what the real authors of the resolution ‘Were driving at in seeking its passage. Its only other effect, would be to stop all street and alley cleaning, and all other sanitary ‘Work, and to throw out of employment, at the most inclement season of the year, a class of poor laboring men who are alrea‘;, in these dull times, nearly at their wits’ end ‘how to provide bread for their families. In this light the measure is not likely to be ser. vViceable even in the paltry way of making party capital. Mr. Randall js much foo ex- ‘perienced and capable a legislator not to ap- Preciate the bad effects resulting from so sweeping @ measure, and no doubthe offered at per request, without having given any at- tention to its details. eee President Eliot, of Harvard University, is One of our distinguished educators who ad- Voeates a compulsory élementary education, aid believes in an enforced reading and writ- ing test for the ballot, because although ed- weation alone will not preserve free institu- tions. diffused elementary education is one of the essential conditions of the formation of that sound national character upon which the safety of our political iustitations does Sbeolutely depend. President Eliot is not @lone in netieving that we vote too much. —— Mr. Holman, ¢ of Indiana, was doubtless an astonished man yesterday wen his propo sition lo repeal tbe resumption act was voted down by & vote of 112 to 15s. The result Proves that a majority of the House, with no reference to party, prefer the musical chink of bard money to the seductive rustle of the greenback, Universal sympathy will be felt for ex- ‘Senator Harlan and Mrs. Harlan, who have ‘been summoned to California by the proba- ble fatal illness of their only son, a young man of high character and fine abilities. jut B&CEIVED— Ia Fine Vondition— H 82.5) per doz. cdo “C) WitmeR, 1915 ra.
