If of Maryland, disclaims the responsibility for the publication of thirty- three columns of John Pope Hodnett’s windy rant in the Congressional Record, and says that he only asked for the printing of the memorial of the working men, which would bave occupied only about a column of the Record, and that the publication, as made, ‘Was a blunder on the part of the printer or some one else. It is certain there wasa great blunder somewhere. The thirty-three column publication contains in fall ail the various verbose, inflammatory hand-bilis Issued by John Pope Hodnett during his ca- reer bere as @ public nuisance; and also an accompanying letter by him addressed to the House, from which we made some ex tracts yesteniay, showing its disgracfal character. Mr. O’Brien aiso disclaims any aifillation with Mr. Hodnett, and we under- Stand that } eclined Mr. Hodnett's request to address one of his meetings. This expla- nation certainly puts Mr. O'Brien's action in the matter in a different light, and it now ns to be ascertained through whose 4: blunder Hodnett’s vile matter was printed with the memorial. ———— A ‘Petty Swindler at Work. ve understand that a person signing bim- self A. He is undoubt- €dly a swindler, and those to whom he may apply would do a good service by turning him over to the police, or furnishing an acea rate description of him, in order that he may be arr: sted and properly punisbe}. Mention was made in Tae Star a few days ago of the operations of a juvenile swindler who had undertaken to collect money from Subscribers to this paper near the Govern- ment Printing Office. From this new de- velopment it would seem that tuere is some- thing like an organized effort by bozas col- lectors to raise money in this way; and sub- scribers should therefore be careful to pay ovly to the duly authorized colle —————_-<re-—__. In the case of one Kiernan, of New York, who purchased the exclusive right to the “hie foreign financial news of th2 ted Press for thirty minutes daily, nd who brought sult against the Manhat- tan Stock Quotation company for t this news before the plaintiff had aban it to the general public, Judge Van Bruat gave a decision for the plaintiff. The license law still continues to grow in favor in Massachusetts. There was a lit- tle joke involved in Mr. Bayard’s nomina- tion, which generally passed unnoticed at the time, and which was found in the fact that the democrats, upon whom the republi- cans bave endeavored to fasten the ‘‘soft” money heresy, pitied a “hard” money man against a republican inflationist. ———<2e-—___ Can the pretended friends of District ioter- Cots Cx plain how their attempts to depreciate the value of District securities are calcu- ihe attempt succeeds e Cincinnati Commercial says thai its iovocacy of the nomination of Greeley, Which nom {pation caused his death, was only & joke.
