G STAR. _| TON: ' 1876. EVENIN ASHING January 5, u WEDPNESDAY.... CROSBY S NOYES Bes” Circulation More than Three | Times that of any other Daily Pa- | per published in Washington, and | therefore by far the Best Adver- | tising Medium in the District of | Columbia. The meeting called at the Arlington to- bight to take measures to secure the holding ofthe National Republican convention in this city has a good object in view, and we trust it may be successful in its efforts. We beg to submit, however, whether this action should be limited to the assemblage of one convention only. It oceurs to us that the mecting should be divested of all semblance of political or partisan character or purpose, und that its efforts should be directed to the approaching conventions of both political parties. The reasons existing in favor of Washington as a place for such meetings Spply with equal force to both parties, and the advantage to Washington would man- ifestiy be as creat in one case as in the other. In support of this view we republish below Bome considerations on the subject which ‘we were led to present last summe time when the matter was agitated to some extent in the interest of the democrat party: Prom The Evening Star Aug 1874. Ast point in favor of Washington a the pla of all others in the country for holding national political conventions. Is mace in the following extract from a long article on the subject tn the Sunday Herald? Of the 22d inst “Lockirg over the iugton, the capital of the country. most eligible city in the Union in © Best democratic conventiin. It belon it is the ecimmon property of the nor @ the weet. It is interested in no iar candidate. ‘There is no political mob ereome and carry by storm & convention as the New York convention was carried in 67 I's Pepolation is cosmopolitan, and all parties and all fandidates wou'd ttand an equalchance, au‘ no sec wenauly preponderate Ttheoth-rs All be reconciled, and Seonvention belil we behind it jess heartbarnicg aud Bitterners and perscnal animosity than wonld In evitably be the result if ft shall be held fn some other eit ‘What is said here of the effe ‘of outside pressure on the New York tion of 1867 can be said with equal truth of the demo- cratic convention held in Cincinnati in 1456, Which nominated Buchanan and Breckin- ridge, and of the republican convention held in Chicago in 1860, which placed Mr. Lineotn in nomination for the Presidency. No person who attended either of these meetings ean have any doubt that the result would have been different in each case had they been held in some other city than Cincivnati and Cal- cago respectively. Whether either of them could have done any better or as well uader other surronnd- ings, bas nothing to do with the question to be considered now. It is clearly the interest not less than the duty of both political par- ties to hold their national conventions in ome place where not cr oe can the delegates thereto be accommorated roperly and rea- Fonably, but also where the will of the whole country can be fairly expressed and the con- clusions of the convention be reached with- out that tofluence which organized local in- ierference and systematic outside clamor Rné pressure are sure to exercise. Any one can see that the meeting of the democratic convention in New York at this time would be equivalent to the nomination of Tilden, While if it should be held in Cincinnati, St Louis or Chicago the nomination of Allen or fome other western man would be almost equally certain to follow, irrespective of what the wishes of the whole party through- out the country might be. And the same — Will bold true, though perhaps in less degree, in regard to the deliberations of the next republican copvention. In freedom from a}l such objections, to say Hothing of other great and obvious advan- tages wisleb she possesses, there is no place in the country that can be compared to ‘Washington for the meeting of national ~~ Hitieal assemblages; and this, we think, the concivsion that must be reached by rib intelligent fair-minded person who will eare- fully weigh all the considerations eitering into the case. hole fisld we believe Wash is the beat and h to hold the ict of Columbia afore DEVLIN & CO, CLOTHIERS. Sun takes the trouble to telegraph to that Paper that the Washington STAR seeks to be “recognized by the caucus asa democratic organ.” Every now and then some similar idiocy to the effect that Tae STAR is an or- gap, or wants to be an organ of this or that party, ia telegraphed away from here. The fact never seems to penetrate the hair of these talented telegraphers that a party or- ganship is the last thing in the world thata well-established paper with the general cir- culdtion and business patronage of Tar STAR, would want, or accept. We hereby folemnly asseverate and put upon record for tbe benefit of all anxious candidates, who ‘want tobe an organ and with the organs stand, that THE STAR hasn't the slightest aspiration in that direction, and so long as ‘any business sense or capacity is left to it, is not likely to hav: —— e+ In whatever direction Mr. Sam Randal) casts his retrenching eyes there comes up a democratic shout of “Don’t"!. Over the Yeport that he has it in mind to stop off the expenditures for the surveying of the public dands, and the geographical and geological surveys of Hayden and Powell, a western paper wrathfuily tells him that “this demo- gogism will never receive the approval of Bhe enlightened people of this country.” a Mr. Byngton, of the Norwalk (Conn) Gazette, Who ought to know the ways of the Washington correspondent, writes that it is “positively asserted” that Proctor Knott's famous Duluth speech was written for him in “Newspaper row.” [Cincinnati Con. If this be so, it ts odd that “Newspaper Yow” never got up anything as good on its own account. ———0e -____.
