WASHINGTON: CROSBY S. NOYES... -- Editor, BS Circulation More than Three Times that of any other Daily Pa- per published in Washington, and | therefore by far the Best Adver- | tising Medium in the District of Columbia Te Advertisers. In order that the large and rapidly increasing edition of Tuk STAR may be delivered to its car- riers and served to subscribers at a reasonable hour each day, it is necessary to close the forms 3 nearly as possible at 3 o'clock p.m. Adverti- sera are therefore requested to send in their adver- tisements not later than TWELVE O'CLOCK. =f ecetved after this hour there is great danger that, with the exception of imperative cases,—such as Deaths, Lost, &c.,—they cannot appear until the Following day. es The Presidential Ba le Ground. The first movement in the Presidential campaign of the present year will be made in this city next week, when the National Executive Republican Committee meet to determine the time and place for holding the republican Presidential Convention. The second one will be the meeting next month of the National Executive Democratic Com- Mittee for the saine purpose. These in turn Will be followed of course by the assembling of the great conventions and thé nomination of their respective candidates for the Presi- deney, which wiil all take place late in the fpring or early In the first summer month. if Wwe judge correcily of the views of various members of these committees with whom we have conversed. It is safe to say, therefore, that the ratification meetings will open the campaign by July, and it promises to be con- fined for active work to a smaller number of states, though aggregating just one-fifth of the electoral vote, than would at first glance be supposed. A leading democrat and a weil known and careful republican receutly ascertained this to be the fact from the fol- jowipg calculation on which tuey both REPUBLICAN STATES. Iltinois 2 Vv ermont. Massachuse Rhode Island - Pennsylvania . Obte.. Minnesota. Nebraska. Michigan Wisconsin . pei Total..... +16 DEMOCKATIC STATES Delaware .. Mississippi Maryland... * Louisiana Virgin West Virginia. North Carolina Georgia Florida Alabama Total. Connecticut. New York . In the list of democratic states it wul be noticed that every southern state is given to that party, except South Carolina, aod in the republican list Colorado, which will be admitted this year before the election, is added. The tables then stand: Republican 164, democratic, 152—total electoral vote 370, of which 156 votes are required to elect. The republicans lack 22 and the democrats t4. To secure these it is very evident that the latter must have New York, for with that state and two or three others on the doubtful list the required number can be ob- tained, without even the 15 electoral votes of Indiana. But if New Jersey and Con- necticut are lost, Indiana, New York and California must be saved to win the day. In any event the stateof New York must be Kept within the democratic column if the party wins, and will necessarily be the center of the Presidential battle ground. On her borders will be the contest over New Jersey and Connecticut, while in the west and on the Pacific Slope, Indiana, California and Oregon will be the scene of an animated conflict. This view of the situation, with New York almost hanging in the balance, gives Gov. Tilden’s supporters a claim for his nomina- tion, for without that state it must be con- fessed, especially in the west and south, that be has very little political strength. Tne conduct of his party friends in New York city last fail lost the party theireontrol there, and, added to the course he has pursued in affairs without the city, nearly lost it the state. With a strong feeling against him among some of the democratic leaders in New York, and with the legislature in the hands of the Republicans, it is by no means certain that he could save the state. If the republicans carry New York, of which they are now very confident, they secure more than the 22 electoral votes which they need to eleet a President. Foreign complications, the failure of the new House of Representa- ves to meet the expectations of the country, and other formidable events may change the present situation; but in the present lignt the lables as we have given them seem to be ac- ceptable to good judges in both parties. —\_<ee-—___ The statement has been made that the Mortuary statistics of Washington for 1 show an increase of the death rate over those of previous years. A comparison may indi- cate this increase, but there are several mat- ters which should be taken into considera- tion in making the comparison. In the first Place there is good reason to suppose that the mortuary lists of previous years have been materially incomplete, for until within about @ year past no effective system of col- leeting Vital statistics was in operation. ‘The increase In the death rate in 1875 was ia measure attributable to the growth of Wash- ington and the natural increase in popula- tion. Taking everything into consideration it is very doubtful whether the rate in 1515 was much, if indeed any ter than that of previous years. However this may be Washington cau still establish her claim to being oue of the healthiest cities in the Union. Sass ee Lightning struck the Chicago whisky ring on Satur: “Boss” Hesing, of the Staats Zeitung, Jacob Keim, H. B. Miller, and Dep- uty Collector Minty, all local magnates, Were arrested on charge of complicity in the frauds. Itis stated that Ream officiated as active agert of :he black-mailers, perform- ing in Chicago something like the functions assigned to Joyce in St. Louis. The amount levied upon the distillers is estimated at $15,000 a month. Hesing, Rehm, Miller, and Minty, the di tillers say, insisted upon the regular payment of this assessment as a tri- bute to the vast “influence” they wielded in protecting Ue crooked whisky factories. ay - --—____— It is something of @ relief to learn that ‘Thomassen or Thomas, the author of the Bremerhaven horror, was not an American after all, but was born in Germany.
