FUGITIVE SLAVES ON BRITISH WAR Suips—The British Admiralty has issued to commanders of her Majesty's ships an amended circular in regard to fugitive slaves. Itorders that any slave received on @ British man-of-war on high seas sha)! be retain- ed aboard until he can be landed ina coun- try or transferred to a vessel where his liber- ty will be secured. Fugitive slaves asking admission to a British man-of-war when in the territorial waters ot a foreign state, must only be admitted if their lives are endanger- ed, and must not be kept on board after the danger is passed; but no demand for the sur- render of & slave to be entertained by a British officer. InsaNE OVER HIS WIFE'S DEATH. At Cincinnati, Charlies Hemmerie, a German, aged 43 years, cut his throat from ear to en Wednesday. His wife was accidently killet some three months ago, and after burial her body was exhumed by resurrectionists, who were captured by the police with the body in their possession. Thisevent has preyed pe on Hemmerie’s mind, and is supposed to bave rendered him partially insane and Prompted his suicide. A FEARFUL DEATH.—At Hyde Park, Pa., Wednesday morning, a mav named William McAuiifie, employed as barn boss at the Hampton mine, met with a fearful death. He was ges ge over the mouth of the mine in the act of lowering some fodiler for the mules, when the car struck him on the head and hurled him into the dark, deep abyss, a depth of 250 feet. A few minutes later his body was found at the ofthe shafta mangled mass of unrecognizabie humanity. THE PUBLIC SCHOOL QUESTION IN NEW | JERSEY.—The proposition of the Rev. Pat rick Hennessey, pastor of St. Patrick's church, Jersey City, to place his schoois under the contro! of the board of education, has given rise to a lively controversy. An attempt was made by republicans in the board to have the maiter referred to a com- mittee composed of democrats exclusively, so that they should take the responsibility of accepting or rejecting the proposition. This was, checkmated, however, and the committee now stands three democrats aud two republicans. The Catholic clergy of the city are divided in opinion as to the wisdom Of the course proposed, some being decidedly opposed to it. EXPERIMENTAL HANGING. — Gustave Grisky, aged 18, accidentally hanged himself 1 evening in an tee house of a butcher shop, 39 Stanton street, New York, where ha was employed. Grisky and bis employer were talking about the negroes who were hanged about a fortnight ago, when the former said he would like to experience the sensations ofa being hanged. He placed a rope over a hook in the ice house, and putting his head in a noose which he had made, his feet slipped from under him, and before he could recover himself he was choked to death, in which position he was found ten minutes after the conversation. How MIssIssipPi YouNG MEN AMUSE THEMSELVES.—A special to the New York Herald from Summit, Mississippi, the place to which troops were ordered, says no armed bands of men were in Summit at any time. ‘Wednesday before Christmas several young men from Amite county, on a drunken spree, talked a good deal about Redmond, intend- ing to annoy and frighten him.
