EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON IDAY CROSBY 5. KOYES...... Bagh” Circulation More than Three Times that of any other Daily Pa- per published in Washington, and therefore by far the Best Adver- tising Medium in the District of Columbia. ee The experiments made with Mr. Edison's new force, while they have notdemonstrated beyond peradventure its applicability to Practical uses, have been of so remarkable a character as to excite no little interest mong the scientific, and the prospect of im- portant results is by no means unpromising. Dr. G. M. Beard, of New York, whobas made ® thorough investigation of the matter prints his conclusions in the 7ribune of that city. He ts of the opinion that while there @re strong suggestions that the discovery may be of the highest practical value there areas yet po positive proofs. He confirms the statement heretofore made that the human body is a conductor of the new force ‘and that during the passage of the current throvgh the body not the slightest unusual sensation is felt; also that the current will pass through giass, bot with diminished force. It differs from electricity in giving no evidence of polarity, and cannot by known laws of elec- tricity complete a cireuit. There are, how- ever, some reasons for believing that it is a hitherto undiscovered form of electricity. ‘The sparks emitted resemble electric sparks; its velocity is equal to that of electricity, and it is resisted by the same substances as electricity, namely: glass, rubber, and air. though in a much less degree. Dr. Beard in conclusion compiiments Mr. Edison by say- ing that he gave him every possible oppor- tunity to revise his experiments, assisted him in making new ones, and submitted to any and every test suggested. a The statement has been made that since Mr. MeMillan bas withdrawn from the Louisiana Senatorial contest the chances of Mr. Pivehvack have greatly improved. Mr. MeMilian has virtually been out of the con- test ever since the recognition of the Kellogg government, and since such recognition has never bad the ghost of a chance of securing @seat in the Seuate. The question of Mr. Pinchback’s admission, however, has no direct reference to the recognition of the Kellogg government, but has to the status of the legislature by which he was electel. Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Edmunds, Mr. Christian- ¢y and other republicans, opposed Mr,Pinca- back’s acmission solely on the ground of the illegality of the legislature. It is not likely therefore that the formal withdrawal of Mr. McMillan will affect Mr. Pinchback’s chances in the slightest degree. ———-<re- According to the Washington correspon- Cent of the Baltimore Gazette, the democrats @re disposed to take the wind out of Mr. Biaine’s republican sails by adopting his proposed amendment to the constitution oif- band. He says: “ All the democrats to whom I have talked bave, without reference to their religious predilections, assured me that they were so apxious to allay all religious antipathies that they would vote for Biaine’s amend- ment most cheerfully. A member from Penn- sylvanis, who is @ most sincere and devout Catholic, told me ee that he would favor the amendment, in doing so he Enew he would reflect the unanimous seuti- laig.” ment of the Catholic laity of his + 2ee: Judge Dav is, from the bench in New York, in according a “struck jury” in the Tweed case, almed a deserved blow at our present antiquated jury system, when he said that the methed of challenging jurors had the ef- fect of excluding from the jury box the reat- ingand thinking men of tnecommunity. He also said in commendation of struck jurors, that in a case like the one of the people against Tweed, it was wise to select as juries high-toned, honorable men, who could give @ fairand 'd impartial verdict. As ex-Senator Carpenter has been threat- ening the Chicago Tribune and other papers ‘With libel suits, it would seem that the Mil- waukee Times, of December 7th, ought to furuish bim material for a dozen actions. That paper says very unpleasant things about the ex-Senator. By the way, it is odd that Mr. Carpenter, who now seems so much inclined to defend his character in the courts, never brought the N.Y. Tribune to account for that old story about his goings ou at Long Branch. The procession of strangers, fifteen hundred strong, marching up the Avenue yesterday, headed by a band of music, was, quite natu- rally, supposed to be another batch of Vir- ginians on their way to the Capitol to take possession of the House offices. It proved, bowever, to be an excursion party from Pennsylvania. ——+re-+-—___ As everybody is interested in the matter of cheap food, it is pleasant to learn from the monthly report of the Department of Agri- culture that the corn crop for 1874 is one of the largest ever grown In the country; that the potato crop is extraordinary im both pro- duct and quality, and thatthe buckwheat crop equals that of last year. ———-_.es- The Philadelphia detectives baving suc- ceeded so well in finding Charlie Ross, have volunteered to help the New York police to hunt up Bill Tweed. And the latter are so uncivil as to turn up their noses at the offer. ABFLE FOR a weoes A= HAB- NESS, will eT ER.
