STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY..November 17, 1975. the recent discovery near that place (Mays- Ville), of the remains of an ancient macad- ‘mized road similar in its character to the bank at an average depth of about six feet below the surface, and continues along the narrow strip of bottom land at the foot of the hills for a distance of five or six miles, when ll trace of it is lost, the current of the river having cut into the hills and entirely oblite- rated it. Like the West Virginia road, the as it has been traced, it is discernable in the bank by a black substratum of ashes, which seem to be mixed with particles of green stone, flint, and occasionally steatite. In depth the broken stone varies from ten to eighteen inches. The material employed appears to be boulders of red sandstone, which must have been transported from some distant part of the country, there being but little if any of that character of rock in that neighborhood. In the vicinity of Cabin Creek, five miles or more from Maysville, the material seems to change; instead of the red sandstone, a coarse white cheat, obtained from the bills near by, being used. It isa wonderful piece of workmanship, and is an- other trace of the lost race that once peopled this continent — before the Indians came into poss sso. It is well-known that the President's favor- ite theory in regard to the Indians is to in- ¢uce them to remove to the Indian territory where they will have the advantages of a fine climate, fertile lands, and best of all, the example of a respectable fraction of their own race struggling slowly but surely into ¢elvilization. But the Indians do not take kindly to the propositioa. Spotted Tail, speaking for @ part of the powerful Sioux nation when in Washington last, said in reply to the suggestion that they remove to ibe Indian territory, “If this country you speak of is such a good country why don't you send the white intelopers (Black Hills mirers) now in our country there and let us alone?” In his talk to Oligario, chief of the Mission Indians of California, yesterday the President urged that these Indians go to the Indian territory. “How far away is this country you speak of?” asked Oligario. When the I’resident explained that they Would have to cross the big mountains and by traveling day and night might reach there in a week, Oligario replied that his people would have none of it, and to illus- trate their reluctance to change their dwel- lung place said that he once desired them to remove to a place withia sight of their homes but they woukl not be induced to go. It is pretty plain that it will be a slow pro- cess to bring these wild Indians up to the point of appreciating the advantages of ci vili- ation and citizenst ip. gees We bave received the printed form ‘A Memorial to the Congress of the United States, concerning the abolishment of the Senate.” The memorial makes outa very fad condition of national affairs, and thifis tbe remedy is in the abolishment of the Sen- ate, “which, not elected by the people, and bence aristocratic in its tendencies, has alwas advanced the interest of the money, railroad and manufacturing speculators to the prejudice of the common welfare.’ The memorial further sets forth that the Senate, besides being anti-democratic, is of itself superfiuous, and it is therefore re- quested that an amendment to the constitu- tion be laid before the people of the United Stetes, in the proper form and manner pro- posing: “That the Senate,(a mere copy of the aristocratic House of Lords in England, and other monarchies,) be abolished and its privileges and daties—so far as they do not become supertiuous—be transferred to the House Of Representatives.” This form of memorial seems to bave been | }' circulated pretty widely for signatures, and perhaps when the petitions begin to come in rext session, the Senate will see the force of the reasoning, and promptly “‘come down” and abdicate its aristocratic and superfluous powers. -seee- Two parties in Baltimore recently found guilty of sending seurrilous postal cards through the malls, and sentenced to paya fine and suffer imprisonment until the fine was pal bave been discharged@y a United States Commissioner under the law { Congress authorizing -any commission of the court to examine into the facts, P s found that the petitioner, ing Usirty dsys in jail, is with- ns tO pay said fine and costs, his discharge. If this precedent “reafter as mentof of fenders will be meted out in imprisonment alon:, as the Imposition of a fine will be of be avail. .oe——___— George W. Blant, the well-known con- tributor to the New York Erening Jost, has recently been in Washington and sees a great change for the better since a previous visit. The streets, he says, are well paved, the city is well provided with sewers, and the grounds around the Capitol, although they are not fnlshed, give the promise of great beauty. “If they do steal there (of Which I give no opinion),” says Mr. Blant, “they show something for it. which is more than our thieves do bere.” ———_-«ee- A correspondent writes to us that while conceding fully the necessity, as a health measure, for the establishment of public urinals, that the one now crectet in the open space in front of the Bank of Washington is rather foo public and conspicuous, and he suggests that its location be changed to the shaded triangular space near by, or to the merket- house side of the Avenue. Tune sug- Bestion comes from an inteliigent source, and we refer it to the Board of Health for their consideration. a Well, the Guibord funeral bas taken piace, and after all the pother there has been no wloodshed or breaking of leads over the “Bir. The Catholics have wisely followed the vies tardily given by Bishop Bourget, and i. | the troublesome bones to the purely ecclesia. tical punishment invoked by him, ‘He has du! v cursed the ground in which Gui- bord is buric.!, and as the friends of Guibord don’t seem to etre much about the cursing, both parties can «Tord to let the matter, and ‘the bones, rest. eee -— It is satisfactory to know that that sterling magazine, The Galaxy, is receiving a support commensurate with its merits.
