ScHOoL Room HYGIENF.—At the session of the American Public Health Association | in Baitimore, yesterday, a paper on school- ro.m hygiene, by Dr. D. F. Lincoin, of Bos- ton, was read, containing many suggestions | br of vaine and current importance. Diseases | of the eye, certain defurmities of the spine and enfeeblement of the nervous system and digestion are caused by bad arrangements of light, beating, ventilation and school desks- Gymnastics are valuable, and almost all children should take part in them. Physi- clans should undetstand and insist that School studies be not excessive, unsuited to the eyes, superficially or mechically done, or tending by the way they are taught, by their very patore, to exhaust the system or exag. gerate susceptibiltty. It is the duty of phy- sicians to interest others in these things. Teachers should also be informed by lectures upon these subjects, or bygiene should be taught in the normal schools; or perhaps, it Would be better to say that teachers should be taught the rules of health. “Every city should bave a anita inspector and in- structor of schools, who should be a physi- Clan. ———— The Cincinnati Ewjuirer is in a state of mind about the coming Prestdential can- Vass, and slashes around wildly among the candidates. Concerning Governor Tilden it fays:—“Sam Tilden has been perspiringly following the tow-path on the Erie Canal, flagellating a spavined and foundered horse, headed toward the White House, that was bauling a leaky boat labelled ‘Reform.’ The horse is dead, the boat is sunk, and Sam’s oceupation’s gone.” ©f the prominent r publican reformer it ti small beer:—“There never was a greater bosh in the world than the talk of Bristow. He doesn’t carry enongh under bis hat. Heis a sham resormer, and in jess than a year will 0 to join in oblivion the chost of civil ser- vice reform.” Next it gently takes Samuel Bowles by the ear, and make the novel sug- gestion that “there never was a more op- portune time to urge the claims of Charles Francis Adams.” And finally it growis savagely at the threatened revival of Hora- tio Seymour as a democratic candidate. “Yes,” it exclaims; “let's have a little more of Hora He's very popular. He might, by hard work, be able to carry one state.” Somehow, they don’t seem to be happy out in Obio. } Prof. Hartshorne, of the University of Pennsylvania, read a paper before the American Public Health Association in Session at Baltimore Tuesday setting forth the fact that the sanitary conditions exist- ing at watering places are very unfavorable to health for several reasons. A real danger exist in connection with the possible con- tamination of drinking water by soil satura- tion with ordure and house drainage at such resorts. The atmosphere is rendered bad under the influence of excretory matter, and the crowd breeds fevers and other forms of malady. He believed that mortuary statis- ties would show that the death rate at water- ing places is unusully large. It is a little Singular that the very places selected as healthful resorts by the fashionable shoult in reality be the least favorable to physical security for di Several accounts of rac tween steam boats on the Potomac have recently appeared in the Alexandria papers. One of these coolly states that a late race having been a Ue, another contest would have to take place todecide the question of speed. Pre- suming these reports to be true, we cannot believe that these contests are indulged in With the kuowledge of tue proprietors of the vessels. The practice is corceded tobe high! y dangerous, and has been the direct canse of mapy terrible disasters. Let it be stopped before the community is shocked by a: | wholesale loss of buman 1if lay evea- and Lake vad companies | ing that the Michigan ¢ Shore and Fort Wayne have agreed on a basis 0: and passengers. The E and Pennsylvania companies are in accord with it, and the Baltimore Ohio are expecte! to cuncur “a ‘the general plan to reduce expenses and maintain rates.”” ‘The N.Y. Post says that harmonizing these important interests cannot fail to have a good effect on rajlroad credit, which has been So Severely shocked by the suicidal policy of railroad Managers « during tne ‘past year.
