_EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY......November 6, 1975. ° B@™ Circulation Mere than Double that of any ether Daily Paper | published in Washington. | ‘The Annual Reports Departmental and bureau reports are com- ing into season. They wiil be as conciseand | interesting as usual. The following extracts from tie report of the Small Potatoe Bureau have the true Centennial ring: “In the division fur the dotting of {'s, the ‘Work bas largely increased, chiely on ac- count of the egotistical nature of the busi- ness transacted. The number of t's dotted during the fscal year was 715,507,52x. The number remaining on baxd undotiet, Jane 39, 1875, was 181,360y. “In the division for the crossing of t's there bas been a falling off of 53,76: as compared with last year. This i~ accounted for by the fact that there have not been so maay t's to cross, and by the additioual fact that many have been inadvertently left uncrossed. This Serious omission will be remedied ia fatare, because a t uncrossed looks like 1. “I bave to report a gratifying spread of temperance principles and practice among the employes of this bureau, as evinced by ‘the cireumstance that when any extra holi- day has been granted to mem»ers of tempe- rance organizations, the majority of the clerks availed themselves of tt. It has also been observed by a clerk specially detailed for this duty, that ali employes who left their desks during office hours returned chewing coffee beans or lemon peel—thus showing their love of those essentially tem- perate beverages, coffee and lemonade. I have, therefore, the houor to recommend the establishment of a coffee plantation and lemon grove on one of the public reserva- tions south of Pennsylvania avenue. The force of the objection that may be urged Sgainst this enterprise, viz: that there is not cient winter heat in this locality for the successful cultivation of coffee and lemons, wili not be of long dura- tion, as I anticipate that the next House of Atives will make it hot enough for s20e- Government subsidies in the shape of money or jands to steamship and railroad companies have become exceedingly un- popular and it is doubtful whether Congress willever again hold out such inducements to private corporations. A new steamship company is organizing in New York which itis said will pot ask Congress for any aid whatever. Thesteamers are to ply between New York, St. Thomas, and Venezuela, and are to depend wholly upon the legitimate profits of commerce for support. The New York Journal of Commerce 1n noting the enter- prise says that after all too much importance has been attached tosubsidies, as adjuncts in the support of steamship jines; and that while the New York and Brazil company have withdrawn their vessels for want of a sufficient mail appropriation, a line has been put on between Baltimore and Brazil which expects to live without a snbsidy. Enterprises begun im this spirit of seif- dependence deserve success. —————<e2-____ The lard “ corner” in New York, to which reference was made in this column yester- day, still continues, and it now looks as if the bulls would finally bring the bears to terms. The case of a Mr. Perry, who hal contracted to deliver lard amounting to $70,000, but failed because he had agreed to deliver it at 6% cents per pound, but found he could not purchase it now for less than N& cents, was brought before the produce exchange on Thursday, but no decision was reached. Thecorner has resulted in great loss to the lard dealers, since they are either com- pelled to buy at the bulls’ prices, or pay the Gifference between the price named in their contracts to deliver and - average market price. We don’t know that Gen. McCiellan is oa the Presidential track again, but {t looks rather suspicious that he has been inter- Viewed by the Baltimore Gazefie upon the political situation; that he declared that he ‘was notin the field, and was seeking no office, and that be thereupon proceeded to express himself in favor of hard money through a gradual return to a specie basis; of reform in the whole conduct of the government; and that, in conclusion, he announced himself as thoroughly identified with the democratic party, looking to its success “as the ulti- mate means of restoring harmony to the na- tion.” Gen. McClellan thinks of making Baltimore bis permanent home. ——__~+e--___ The hearty reception given to Gov. Cham- berlain by the Chamber of Commerce of Chaffeston yesterday, ana the congratula- ons he received upon the reforms of his ad- ministration and the increasing prosperity of South Carolina ought to convey a whole- some lesson to the northera men whom ac- cident bas made chief executives of southern states. Gov. Chamberlain has apparently fulfilled his pledges in good faith, and the re- sult is that bis labors in behalf of the state are fully appreciated by the people. The case of Gov. Chamberlain forcibly tllus- trates the truth of the proverb, “Honesty is the best policy,” even in politics. ee A New York jury has fixed the value of a toe ai $100. A man the toes of whose foot bad been run over by @ strect car, sued the company. laying his damages at $5,000, or 81,000. a toe. The jury thought this estimate too high by $4,500, and brought in a verdict for $500, or $100 a toe—which was toe bad. Well, the fall elections are over and the oceupation of Mr. Sam Bowles is gone. He can’t nominate Charles Fraucis Adams for anything for six months, at least. LEETBEPTs AND BagaHour. two — A sopsclally for Dy»; tig and tn fae substi- Eiivior Dew cr Coats open tS enue.
