THE GLENDENNING SCANDAL. — At the meeting of the Synod of New Jersey, held ia the Central a Chureh in Orange » Rev. John 8. Glendenning, the ‘the Prospect Avenue Church, Jer- sey City Heights, who was deposed by the pcan d city Presbytery for immorality, with- drew his appeal to the Synod from the deci- sion of the Presbytery. The reason that he assigned was, not that he feared that the issue would be unfavorable to him, but as he Was about to retire from the pastorate of the cburch, and withdraw from the Presbytery and Synod, it was not necessary for him to rosecute the ay 1. The Prospect Avenue ‘hurch apy Ted also from the decision of the Presby' , Claiming that that boty had no right todissolve the pastoral relations existing between Rev. Mr. Giendenning and his flock. Practically the same questions are involved in the appeal of the church @s in that of Mr.Glendenniog. The appeal was referred to & commission expected to report to-day. A meeting of the trustees of the church will be held in a few days to take such action as the interests of the charch seem to require.—N. ¥. Times, 224. Down Srocktnes.— Ths Nashua pt H.) The trick was repeated e' morning fora week or more. e second trader was not to be undersold. Upon arriving at his store he each morning marked his stock a few cents under iis rival. At the end of the week the second trader was selling stockings, which cost at wholesale twenty-five cents, for five cents. This was the first trader's opportu- pity. SOUTHERN RAILROADS. railroad man- ager, pow in Boston, gives the following as the condition of the railroads south of the Potomac: The represented capital of these railroads is $571,000,000. Twenty millions of this capital are paying dividends, and only ten millions earning dividends, the other tea millions being in roads leased to other corpo- rations, which, in consequence. are obliged to pass their own dividends. Three-fourtus of all the stock and bonds of these roads have been sunk, and the roads are virtually bank- rupt. The main cause of this, according to the tame authority, is reckless competition. The price of all transportation has been re- duced to cost, and as these roads intersect almost the cntire agricultural district, this reduction has not increased the business. A convention is soon to be called for the pur- pose of adopting measures to put @ stop to this competition. A POLICEMAN IN A TIGHT PLACE — Police Officer Haines, of the 2ist New York, as he lay at his home in bed, saw Jobn Jones, @ burglar, enter his room.
