WASHINGTON: THUESDAY .October 21, 1875. CROSBY &. NOTES... BD Circuiation More than Double | that of any other Daily Paper published in Washington, There is some discassion going on whether “ gmflation has been killed by the result in Ohio. The Cincinnati Commercial, in a posi- tion tooverlook the battle-f-+ld, holds that though the Inflation movement was a form- idable one, it dates its downfall from the Ohio canvass. The inflationists have besa beaten without remedy, and the further they go the stronger their sense of defeat will Prove. Ohio has done a great deal to edu- cate the people of the Mississippi valley on ‘this subject, and no lesson of this memorable struggle will be lost. The more the situation is examined, the clearer the perception will be that Ohio is the keyof the position. The Pacific and Rocky Mountain s(ates are all for hard money. Tne eastern states are har! money also. We have thus, to begin with, the east and the ‘West solid for hard money. The center was the soft spot, and that bas been bardened. In thesouth the oll democratic doctrine of @ constitutional currency still is held in ven- eration, and the recent experience in the eon- federate script, supplements, with tha pee-1l- iar wisdom of the school in which all learn, the precepts of our political sages. The south was shaky during the Ohio canvass; but the defeat of Allen has excited a feeling there that it is unprofitable to depart from sound doctrine throngh any presumption that @ temporary advantage may be gained. tee On Monday next an be held in Oregon to fill a Congressional vacancy caused by the death of Mr. La Dow, demo crat, who was elected by a plurality vote a year ago, there being three candidates and an actual majority of about 6,000 votes against him. This yearalso there are three contestants, Warren, rev., Lane, dem., and Whitney, ind. On the sim> day Colorado Will hold an election to choose delegates to a convention which is to form a constitution which is @ pre-requisite to her admission into the Union as a state on the 4th of July, 1876. Congress, it will be remembered, at its last session agreed to the admission of Colo- radoon the date named. On the 30th inst. Missouri votes for or against the ratification of the new constitution adopted by the con- vention which was held last summer. Com- paratively speaking these elections are un- important, and are mere skirmishes prelim- inary to the exciting contests which will take place in nearly a dozea of the larger states on the 2d of November. Indian Commissioner Smith calls special Attention (in an Assoctated Press dispaten from this city) to that feature of the report of the Red Cloud commission which shows that they were only able to find frauds amounting to not exceeding £1,000 to 7,000 in disbursements amounting to over $1,- 300,000. Did Commissioner Smith overlook another feature of that report, in which the Investigators say they “met with many transactions marked by a want of that vigi- lance, astuteness, and decision of character Which should belong to the head of the In- dian bureat The Springfield Republican, commenting on the report, says: “ Indian Commissioner Smith is sat down upon very heavily: the judgment expressed of him is that he was well-meaning but incompetent; that be neglected plain duties and failed to carry out laws.” 22+ It will be @ source of satisfaction to the friends and relatives of persons fatally in- Jured on railroads to know that Mr. Charles Francis Adams, jr., says in the Allan‘ic Monthly that “few lives are so jaticiously expended as those of the unfortunate victims of railroad accidents.” He argues thatevery life thus lost directs attention to the cause that led to it, and new appliances are in- vented, new precautions are imposed, and a greater and more watchful care is incu!- cated. The statement is made that thenum- berof persons killed by railroad accidents materially decreases It is to be hoped that reliable statis.ies bear out this assertion. Even if it be trae, perfection in the management of rai!road trains cannot be hoped for in the near future, and by the time ft is attained thousands of lives will bave been sacrijiced. + 266 —_ Elsewhere in THE STAR will be found the first instalment of some readable notes of a recent trip to the Alleghany mountains and the famous “Blue Grass region” of Ken- tucky. The readers of Tae STAR are in- debted to the observant eye and ready pen of one of our leading physicians for these in- teresting “notes,” as they will have guessed by the initials. +200. It is to be hoped that the Jacksen Demo- cratic Association doen't mein to re-establish their old STAR title of Dem Jacks, but their proceedings last night look like it They do say that bonn att just sat down and bowled when be beard of Chandler's ee at 5 o'clock city pastors, in ! ; oes, ot Phila. there to De. >. preaches lng the week.
