I'd rather not say what it was just now.” His relative, Dr. Charles Allen, of this city, who bas just retnrned from the and that, says the Doctor, explosively, @ conglomeration hard to beat.” Doctor Allen, however, figures out from the close- ness of the result in a vote of such unprece- dented magnitude that the democrats have Inade immense gains in the republican state of Obio, giving them comforting assurance of national victory. Like St. Paul, the Doc- tor is cast down but not destroyed see: Gen. Boynton bes a@ letter in the Cincin- pati Gortte of yesterday exposing the true inwardness of the Delano “resignation” of the Interior portfolio. After giving a fall history of the case, including documentary evidence. Mr. Boynton says: “<The weakness of the charge that Secretary Bristow has been pursuing Mr. Delano is aut. ficiently | Fg soe bot in the light of the above facts. ‘lano and all his following had Jong been busy in their attempts to under- ine the new tary with the President, before Gen. Bristow was aware that he had consented to fill a place to which Mr. Delano believed himself entitied through a promise of the President. When the move against the whisky thieves began. Gen. Bristow en- countered the friends of Mr. Delano working industriously at every turn to thwart the efforts of the Treasury Department in the matter, and it will be > found hereafter that fome of the chief newspapers which have de- fended Mr. Delano and assaulted Secretary Bristow bave done both in the imme:tiate interest of the whisky and the Indian rings. ‘The friends of Mr. Delanohave made his re- Tova! from the Cabineta triumph for Gen. Bristow, through their continual declara- tions that be was trying to force Mr. Delano from the Cabinet, but that the latter would ‘stick,’ while the former would himself be obliged to resign.” —— —<—— It Is to be hoped the public has heard of the Jast arrest of employes of the City Post Office for some time to come. Within afew months past half a dozen or more employes have been arrested or dismissed in disgrace on Recount of irregular, and in some cases posi- lively criminal, practices, and it would seem that by this time the black sheep ought to be pretty well driven out. As a rale, per- Sistency in wrong-doing always results in exposure and disgrace, and especially is this true of the Post Office Department, where a large corps of detectives are employed in un- earthing crime. Notwithstanding a know- ledge of this fact, and the arrests which have been made from time to time, another vic- iim bas fallen into the trap prepared for his reception. Atlantic City, built up on the sandhilis of the Jersey coast, has through the energy and enterprise of @ few men grown upto be a beautiful and attractive pleasure resort with @ permanent population of 2,100 men, women, and children. Eighty or ninety new houses, mavy of them expensive structures with fine surroundings, were built this year, and a yet larger number will be erected next season. The notable growth of the place is attributed largely to the abundant facilities for cheap and comfortable travel there, afforded by the Camden and Atlantic railroad. This is a hint that other pleasure resorts and railroads leading thereto might follow to advantage. <.oe The Postmaster General uttered no uncer- Jain sound when he laid certain charges at the door of the late postmaster at Bridge- Fort, Connecticut. “To particuiarize he says, “Andrew J. Osborne paid you #150, in three notes of $0 each, for securing his appoint- ment as route agent on the Housatonic rall- road, and George L. Howe, or his friends, paid you $50, more or less, for secaring his appointment as mail messenger between Bridgeport and East Bridgeport.” As the delinquent p. m. attempted no devial his “dissevered head dropped into the basket, Still shouting the ‘Battle Cry of Freetom. This is a summary but a just way of dealing with like official officials. —see-—__ A novel contest in the shape of a carrier- pigeon flying match between Baltimore and Philadelphia, distance one hundred miles, took place yesterday. The pigeons on being tossed up rose to a great height, and after making a few cireuits in the air darted off towards Philadeiphia. The first reached the Jatter city in two hours and thirty-one min- utes, the second in three hours and seven Minutes, and the third in five hours and four minutes. The first, it will be observed, flew St the rate of forty miles per hour, while the Otbers might easily have been beaten by a railroad express train. The birds were unin- ow mbered, none of | Som carrying ing messages. The Charleston. Nace! ‘becomes quite wrathy over the Ohio election, and informs the New ‘York democracy that ‘the democrats of the West and south wil] not submit any longer to the insolent and unserapulous dictation of the New York democracy;” and it insists that “in the national convention next year the lead must be taken from them—whether they like it or not, whether they go or remain!” ‘This sounds a little like the talk in this same Charleston in 1360, when the national demo- cratic convention split. es —__ Baltimore is after the scurrilous postal card writers. A person forwarding such cards through the mails last week was con- vieted, and yesterday another person was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of 100. The postal laws very properly make Unis @ serious offence. If they did not, un- Worthy persons would make what was in- tended to be a cheap couventence in the way of luter-communication a chaanel for the dissemination of personal viilification. ——$— Tweed’s lawyers are still quibbling. Among the assertions formally made by them is one that their client was never “president” of the board of supervisors, as charge, bat “chairman.” The majority of the New York Judiciary have come to the couclusion that the time for decisive action bas arrived, and ‘the prospect now is that lawyers’ quibbles ‘will avail Mr. Tweed but li ee It appears that the prompt actioa of act- ing S:cretary Ammen, of the Navy depart- ment, in sending an additional man-of-war 1o Tripoli resulted in a quick apology. The Pasha refused to apologize until the second man-of-war arrived, when seeing that the Americans were not joking he handsomely made amends for the bad coaduct of his sub- jects. He came down. —— so ‘The District Commissiorers, | it will || be seen ‘be reference to our local columas, expressed themselves to-day as opposed to the project Of copverting the Armory building iato a city hospital, for substantially the same rea- Bons set forth in yesterday’s STAR, although In favor of such @ hospital ‘This will no doubt settle the matter. ——_—__--..
