European Views of the Result in | wiss PNIEOR MED PAT 1 It was to be expected, the New York Pod Bays, that the British press would “express Fatisfaction at the result of the October elections in America,” a3 cable dispatch Bays they are now doing. Whatever mis- takes the London newspapers may some- imes make in respect to the detalis of American politics, they can very easily un- derstand the controversy between hard Money and an irredeemale currency —be- tween the honest payment of debts and repa- ciation. The Ohio Inflation orators wonld ‘@newer the English jouroals with a sneer at the “bloated British bondholler.” It hap- pens, however, that the real test of the cre lit ofour government is furnishel by the for- @ign holder of its obligations. In this coun try the government compels the poopie to Take its paper promises: the people must use them as money because they can got no realmoney. The questi therefore, doos not immediately and daily occur to them ‘Whether it is safe to trust the government. In Europe, however, the people are not com pelled to accept the feueral o>ligations; Whether they shall b2 taken depends upon the degree of credit which Is given to oar government. Unless it is prepare! to dis- pense with credit altozethor, it is important that its credit should stand the real test to Which it is submitted—the faith of foreign Capitalists. The London aewspapers express “satisfaction at the October elections” be- cause they believe the vote shows that the American people mean that American debts hall be paid. —$—_——_.0e-+—____ One of the most interesting trials nomi- nally under the law for preventing smuggling ‘Will be entered upon in New York this week, in the case of Charles L. Lawreace, who is Indicted for an extensive and most remarka- bie system of fraudulent importations in the line of first-class silks and laces. The coun- sel of Lawrence have made no denial of his guilt. but put in a plea that he has not been Jegally extradited and ought to be released. He was arrested in April last in London on a dispatch from Washington on a charge of forgery, but when he arrived in New York it appesred that he was wanted for a violation cf the revenue laws. The letterof the extra- ditien law ts that a prisoner delivered to one country by another shall be tried solely for ihe offence for which he was arrested and ex- iradited, and on this Lawrence expects t0 fet clear. A correspondence between this fovernment and that of Great Britain on the extradition of Lawrence has been golag BrENt on some time. In the days of slavery, in som2 of the southern states the slayer of a colored person was helt pecuniarily responsible for the value of his victim, so that the indulgence of one’s murderous propensities was a some- What costly Inxury. It would appear that in some parts of Virginia the cost of killing ® colored man has been materially redaced Of late, since we read in @ Virginia exchange abat one Bundle was recently sentenced to pamed Jones at a camp-meeting held in Loudoun county, several weeks ago. Upon the payment of this sum the prisoner was discharged. ee- The system of awards at the Centennial exhibition will differ fiom the usual one of giving medals. The judges will pass upon Zhe merits of the different articles exhibited, in writing. The judges will number two hundred, half of whom will be foreigners: The Philadelphia Times commenis th sys- em, but expresses the hope that great cure ‘Will be used in the selection of Jadgas. if the Selection be wisely mie, it says, the system will work weil, Should understand that to choose these two hundred judges will be one of the most dimi- eult of all their daties, and one in which they cannot afford to make avy mistakes. —-—___ The question of taxing church property, which bas been agitated 1m this District and elsewhere throughout the country, is now up vorcign in Massachusetts, and is being discussed there with @ good deal of arimation. It is Said there is $20,000,000 worth of this sort of property in Boston alone, and all exempt from taxation. Church property, including not only churehes, but school and charitable Dulldings, parsonages, &c., is rapidly accu- Jnulating, and the time is not distant when abe people of the state will be compelled to consider whether it shall not bear some por- ‘Lion of the load of taxation for the support of overoments which protect them no less than ahe citizens In their property. a A poputar tide of public iv New York in favor of re-election of Recorder Hackett, who, sines bis oceupaney of the office has been the terror of evil do2rs+ and has soevenly heli the scvles of just sto win the admiration and respect of al! ‘ion bas setin Wood citizens. A life-long ocrat, he was zejected by Tammany Hali becuse of the Personal hostility of Grant Sachem Kelly, only to be nominated by the anti-Tammany democracy. As the cantidateof this wing Of the party he will be supported by tha re- publicans, and there fs a fair probability of his election, notwithstanding Mr. Kelly’s hostility. The estab! nent of @ city hospital a Bubject now under consideratioa by @ com- mittee of the Board of Health, may be neces- fary, but the suggestion of the old armory building for that purpose is a very bad ona, upless the idea is to take it down and rebuild it in some p!ace where it will not be such an eyesore. It is now a foul blot ina pleasing prospect, defacing by its ugliness our pri ici- pal park, which should have nothing to mar its beauty from the Capitol all the way @round to the White House. A hospital is a good thirg, but a public park in the heart of @ large etty is Bot the place for it. ene An exchange say: not as deep as a well, nor as wide asa chureh door, but ‘tis enough; ‘twill serve.” Philo- Bophic republican politicians who have made ihe national situation a study, profess to b> ratified with the small majority, and argue that while a defeat would have disheartened this party, a slight majority iudicates the Possibilities of 1876, and shows the necessity Of increased activity from now until next Yall.
