Tweed to secure his release from the prosecution instituted against him by the outraged people of New York city and their exultation over the decision of Judge Donohue directing the plaiutiffs to furnish ‘what it was a physical impossibility to do, ‘Viz: a bill of particulars setting forth in de- tall the fraudulent bills upou which he re- eived more than one-fourth of the whole Smount, the case now looks as If the Boss ‘would yet be forced to pay the full penalty of his crimes. At any rate his chances of escape from punist nent have greatly lessened since the unan'm91s decision of the general term Of the suprenie court of New York reversing Judge Donohue’s order. Jadg2 Barnett, in delivering the opinion of the court, said that there were several substantial reasons why the Dill of particulars shoul! not be far- nished. First, it was no? in the power of the Plaintiffs to comply with the requirements Of Judge Donobue's order. The disastrous effects of a decision by the court affirming the order for @ bill of particulars are tersely set forth by the Tuaes when it ‘Says that had Jadge Donohue beea sustaine1, not only would Tweed have been able to de: all demands for the restitution of his pland. but all succeeding imitators of the Boss thief ‘would have been able to snap their flagers at the people they had robbed. The court also denied the application for a reduction of bail, and the suits will doubtless be soon called for trial. Meanwhile Tweed's astute counsel will have to cudgel their brains for &@ new device for the release of their noto- rious client. —_——_-.se-—__ SUNFLOWERS rv MALARIA —Mr. T. Serle Jerrold writes to Public Opinion a letter recommending the cultivation of suntlowers in marsbes as @ protection against malarious influences. He says that General Sherman recommended the use of suntlowers for this purpose several years ago, and that he has since found by observation and experiment that they really have a beneficial effect on the atmosphere. He gives several instances Where the sowing of the sunflower seeds has resulted in the protection of a community from miasmatic fevers theretofore quite common. His explanation of the work which the sunflower does is that during its rapid growth it absorbs great quantities of nitrogen and evaporates as much asa quart of water dally. In this city, some years ago, the malaria from the flats in the Potomac above the Long bridge caused fever and ague to prevail extensively in and about the Ni tional Observatory, as it still does to some extent, we believe, in that locality. At the time referred to, the family of the officer in charge of the Observatory (Lieut. Maury, if We mistake not) suffered from the disease, and a large quantity of sunflowers were planted between the buildings and the river The effect, it is generally understood, was not perceptible. If sunflowers were really any protection against malaria, tne people of Council Bluffs, on the Missouri river, ought to be fever-proof, as they are sur- rounded for miles by probably the most Juxuriant growth of sunflowers known in the country, the plants rising almozt to the dignity of trees in height and amount of foliage; but we believe the draggists of that favored locality ell quite as mach quinine asdo those in places where sunflowers are upknow Mr. Comstock, who for several years pas has been engaged in endeavoring to suppress the traffic in immoral articles, gave some astonishing statistics before the New York legislative eommittee on crime on Tuesday last. He stated that in the last three years twenty-two tons of Indecent books, pictures and immoral articles had been seized by him. These had gone among the very best Schools and seminaries ia the country, and among the children of the very best famtlies. Very often lists of children in all the princi- pal seminaries and young ladies’ boarding *cheols were selzed, and the manner in which ine dealers had procured these names was ‘very ingenious. The dealer would send to cach p:iocipal a circular stating that he was «boul to publish a United Svates directory of ull boys and girls in sehools, «c., offering to pay Sve cents for every name sent to him. These lists of names would henceforth become a matter of merchandise, and other dealers would pay high prices for obtaining them. In 1872 there were two large factories in this country where immoral goods were made. He further said that « large number of cases were ready for the grand jury in June last, but no indictments could be pro- cured, as the district attorney alleged a want of time to prosecute. | The developments a: as to the extent of the whisky frauds practiced in Chicago are of a Startling character, one firm alone having defrauded the revenue to the amount of £336,000, the aggregate of unpaid taxes on 4 illicitly-manufactured liquor. This is one of the many cases which will come before the grand jury of the United States court at Chicago. Evidence of the frauds, the most complete and positive, has been accumula- ted, the Tribune says, by the agents and de- tectives employed by the Treasury Depart- Ment to investigate the operations of the Whisky-Ring, and there is little room for doubt that the namber of coavictions wtil tally closely with the number of prosecu- Nons.
