UNHFALTHY SCHOOL ROOMS. Dr. Keane also submitted a communica- tion in relation to school rooms. H-» trans- Inits resolutions for the condemnation of the schoo! rooms in the basementof the 13th street Baptist church, saying: “It would be difficult to find two rooms as unsuited to the pur- pose of the confinement of 120 children and two teachers six hours aday. These rooms are 2xGx1l feet, containing 6,678 cubic feet of air space. or less than 116 feet to each per- ton. ‘The only ventilation Is by an open door or window, and except in very pleasant weather, In some parts of the rooms it is so Cark ag to cause much complaint from the Pupils. I am informed that almost every é OT more of the inmates are obliget ko home, and every day many of them are il frota this confinement in the vitiated at- mosphere. My own opinion is that the boys who attend these schools bad much better re- main at home for their physical as well as mer.tal good, than be subjected to an atmos- Phere that is positively poisonous, and com- Pelled either to submit to the conditions, or denied the advantages of te Instruction. The public schools of Washington and Georgetown are justly celebrated for their excellence in system and teaching. None in this country enjoy a higher reputation, but unfortunately the school-house accommoda- tiors owned by the District are sadly insuf- feient, consequently these batldings and rooms in various parts of the city are fitted Up as well as possible, and rented {ll-venti- lated, and will produce serious illness among them if they continue to cecupy the apart ment described. The teachers are already giv- ing evidence of the effects of this poisoning. all the butldings rented by the District and | occupied by the public schools are miserahiy adapted to the pui ; nearly all lacking Proper ventilation and other requisites for the protection of the health and lives of the littie ones, overcrowded, dark, and badly heated. This is a subject which is perhaps second to none in importance in view of the | 4pproacbing cold season, when windows and doors eannot remata open for ventilation would recommend that exercise of its authorit rooms #8 unfit for such tion, even if thereby may children are compelied to lose for the time being the teachings of the sebools. Compli#ints have become quite frequent of late by citizens residing on the south side of the Eastern Branch, in the county, of the con- stant danger they are ex i 'to by the trains of the East Alexandria branch of the Baltimore and Oto rail running from Bladensburg to Shepherd’s, opposite Alex- ria. There seems to have been no pre- cautions taken by the managers of this road to guard sgainst accidents at this polat. The track rans aeress the road at right angles, and is about three feet higher than the bed of the road just at the end of the bridge; no gates have ever bean constracted to shut off travel during the ing of trains, por do the conductors, slacken the speed, day nor night, in passing bere—the usual rate being 20 to 25 miles per hour. A MAN CRUSHED TO DEATH AND HIS TEAM SMASHED. Tt wan just at this place that Florence Fredericks, on Friday, the 24th of Septem- ber, was instantly killed, his wagon mashed, and two valuabie horses carried along on the cow cateher and torn to pieces. It is doubtful if there can be found another ‘neh instance in the count of a weaithy tion being allowed override the righ of & community with impunity. A DISREGARDED ADMONITION, In February, 174, the Board of Public ‘Works addressed a letter to the president of tbis railroad notifying him that gates should be placed across the street, to be closed when the trains are Approaching. and requesting thatit be done at once. No response was made to this and no attention given to the suggestion. GENERAL RARCOCK’S RECOMMENDATIONS. On the i7th of May last General Babeock addressed @ communication to the District Commissioners, in which he enclosed a state- ment showing the amount of travel over the Anaeostia bridge; stating that the bridge ould be open to public travel early in June. anc suggesting that for the safcty of travel the railroad company be requirei to erect suitable bars or gates at this crossing, to be kept closed both day and night during the passage of al! trains. or a better plan would be to lower the railroad track or con- struct an easy passage over it. THIS SHOWS THE ALARMI»G EXTENT OF THE KISK. The table of travel showed that for Janu. there were 94,240 foot passengers, and riders, 15,244 he 650 teams and wag 745 For Feb i PASSE, Bere, BAG bi and waxons, Seattle, 1.245 hoge, and 4, 100 teams and a sheep BO fool passengers, 1 Tt) horses b 12.45, wilt + 1445 hogs, thy Increase of be observed, was very gre st, travel, and it is presumed that it has siuce b-eu steadily increasing. NO ATTENTION PAID TO THE DISTRICT AU- THORITIES Following this suggestion of Gen. Babcock, Lieut. Hoxie, engineer for the District. o the 26th of the same month, addressed a let- ter to Mr. G. 8. Koontz, general agent for the Baltimore and Ohio railroat company. re questing that company to lake some meas- ures to protect the crossing at this bridge by Means of gates, or to lower the track and cou- Struct an easy crossing over the same. and requesting the agent to Inform him which plan the company would adopt. Noresponse Was made to this, nor has any action been taken to prevent the occurrence of aceidents, Which will be frequent where travel is so great and no precautions taken to guard against casualties. a HIGHWAY ROBRFRY AND ATTEMPTED MURDER.—Yesterday about two o'clock p m., Officer Fifield found @ man lying insen sible on the 7th-street road, near Tay! farm, (about a mile and a half north of the city.) and had him removed to the Bright: wood station. Dr. Stone fonnd two serious coutusions in the back of bis head, made by some blunt instrument, since ascertained to have been the butt of men, going gunning, passed up the road a short time before the finding of the wounded man, and it is almost certain that these men, finding their victim in a partial state of in- toxication, attacked him with their gons, and having robbed nim made off rapidly across the fields. From letters in his pock- ets it was found that the man’s name is John Chas. Pingel, a native of Hanover, and that he was on his way to Ellicntt’s Mills, Md. He was removed to Providence Hospital, and has as yet shown no signs of conse ons. hess, but has very severe spasms every few minutes. The physicians have no hopes of his recovery. —— Mr. R. W.
