EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: Be Circulation More than Double that of any other Daily Paper published in Washington. Alluding to the severe animadversions Yeeently made upon the metho ls adopted by the police in their pretended efforts to recover Charley Ross, the Philadelphia Times say! “It is a reasonable presumption that all per- Sons voluntarily engaged in the search would, above all things, want to restore the missiag ebild.” e ‘This presumption is not at all Peasonable. It is, on the other hand, a most violent one, in the face of the facts that have been elicited. If human testimony is worth @nything it is pretty conclusively established that what was “wanted above all things” by &t least @ portion of the detectives en- gaged in the search was the rewar.t; seco: the credit of the achievement; and last and Teast of all,—except insofar as it imsured the others,—the child himself. If they could Secure these things, well and good; if not, they were not willing that any body else should. At least they were determined todo nothing and say nothin; that would enable others to recover him. There are gcol rea- sons for believing, indeed, that but for this infernal spirit and the almost criminal ac- tion which it prompted the child would now ‘be safe and well in the hans of his parents. ——_——__-<ee- = The rush for clerkhips in the government departments continues unabated, notwith- Btanding the possibility of a general “lock- out” in Ist7. These ambitious young gentle- men seem to place no confidence in the state- ment placarded in most of the department “There are no vacancies In this department, &nd are not content until they have inter- Viewed its presiding officer. when they de- part exceeding sorrowful. One of this class made his appearance before the head of a bureau of the Interior department the other day, and made a piteous appeal for a clerk- ship. He was told the usual story of the non-existence of vacancies, the inadequacy of appropriations, &c., and finally, having become satisfied that it was a hopeless case, asked the head of the bureau if he would oblige him with the loan of halt a dollar to buy something toeat. When will young men ‘who have comfortable homes learn to appre- ciate them, and keep away from the govern- ment departments? ———_-+e--____ The theory of the floods in Texas Is the driving of the water from the gulf into the numerous bays, lagoons, and mouths of rivers which abeund in the vicinity of Gal- veston and elsewhere along the coast, the Winds furnishing the motive power. Shift- ing sand bars extend across these bays and river openings, into which, after a few days of high wind from the south, large quantities of water are driven. Ordinarily when the Wind subsides the water recedes slowly, doing no damage, but should a heavy north wind spring up the water is forced out rap- idly and submerges the low camniry, the out- lets being too s too small to to permit t free egress. New York has taxen a @ step backward in the matter of the salaries of female school teachers, which have been reduced about $200 yer year, while their labors have in- creased. An attempt was made the other night at the meeting of the board of educa- tion to reestablish former prices, but it failed. The Herald very justly says that there is no reason why the female teachers should not be paid as much salary as the males. There is none whatever, provided they do the same work equally well. Of late years the general government has actet on this prin- ciple and promoted many deserving female employes to positions formerly occupied by males. “Mr. John “Cochrane met at Albany yes- terday, wis made permanent chairman, de- livered an address, resolved in favor of Goy- ernor Tilden and canal reform, maie a pilat- form composed of emocratic and republican planks, refused to nominate or alopt a Uieket, was made chairman of a state com- mittee and adjourned without day,” is the terse way the New York Kvrening Post reports the late liberal convention in that state. Ida Lewis, the Newport heroine, seems to be a practical sort of a body. A geatieman recently visited her and “found herin the ‘wash-tub,” from which she emerzed to eon- verse wit her visitor. In answer to the question whether she received many pres- ents, she exhibited a large number of ar- ticles in the way of female wearing apparel, &nd said she would never make use of half ofthem. She is further represented as say- ing that sinal! sums of money would be far more acceptable than such presents. This was a frank but a sensible suggestion, which her admirers would do a do well to heed. A young Unitarian cle clergyman of North- field, Mass., preached a sermon against or- thodoxy in religion on Sanday last, in which he denounced reviv«!s, saying “their success is a rusblight—a whiff of sober reason blows | itout. In the long ran—tn the leep and pe manent and real effect which they pro tuc they drive the best thought aod intelligence of the land away from Christianity, and, sat Qs it Is to say it, in the direction of Wisbelief Of alll religion.” The sermon was evidently intended for Mr, Moody, who is holding revival services ai Northfield, and is expected to make a reply, im which case a lively controversy will en- sue. It is very doubtful, however, if the distinguished revivalist will allow his at- tention to be diverted by the attack of bis unorthodox brother.
