WASHINGTON: MONDAY ..... September 20, 1873. CROSBY S&S. NOYES........ Editor. | Se Circulation More than Double | that of any other Daily Paper | published in Washington. | BPD! soem crenata then te SSS ‘Whether the Pennsylvania democrats will gain any votes or not from the republicans on the financial issue at the November elec- tion, it is pretty clear that they will not re- cruit very largely from the colored popula- tion, nor from the whites who formerly Yarched under the old-line liberty flag. It id remembered against Judge Pershing, the democratic candidate for governor, that, ‘While in the state legis!ature in 1963, he voted for a bill probihiting colored people from going into Pennsylvai.ia to make that state their temporary or permanent residence, He also, in that capacity, voted to denounce President Lincoln's emancipation proclama- tion, and resisted to the extent of his ability the ratification of the thirteenth constitu- tional amendment forever at ing siavery in the United States. Notwithstanding the other issues that have latterly risen to such Prominence, these facts are not likely to be forgotten in the present cauvass. It is not surprising that the noble army of emuggiers keeps on getting bigger and bigger every year, when it is sen to what troubie and expense an houest maa can be put, under our complex custom laws, if he undertakes and law-abiding citize; of Ci recently so unfortunate as to have sent to him by 2 friend in Hamburg, Germany, an raitofhim- self and daughter. The picture. properly enclosed, was forwarted, ria } wk, freight prepaid to that city, by one of the express companies running ou the ocean Steamer lines. But as the consignee was not in New York on its arrival, and as the package Was not directed to be forwarded in bond to Chicago, where he | 1, it was en- tered for clearance at New York, and was subsequently forwarded to him by another express line from that city. And at this Point the custom house broker appears on the scene. Here, also, is the little bill that the astonished Chicagon got with his little package,—worth at most about twodoilars,— and which bill, it must be remembered, does not include the cost of carriage either from Hamburg to New York or from New York to Chicago. These are the Items :— Duty and premium. Appraisement... = te ceeeeeee Sl 05 Of course the bill as rendered is nine parts downright swindle on the part of some- body,—either the custom house broker, or the petty revenue officer, or most likely of both, in collusion. But whether that, or whether the charges are all according to law, the effect is all the same on the out- raged citizen. His temper is tried, his money stolen, his respect for and his confidence in the government destroyed; and the odds are ten to one that he inwanliy and truthfully Swears that if he ever again brings or re- cetves another keepsake or other thing from the father-land or other foreigu country, that thing shall be smuggled in duty free,—so help bim all the powers of earth and air! And this case is only one in a thousand. Another experiment in the way of shippix Feaches to Europe has been mae in Del. ware. Three crates were sent out by a steamer on Weilnesday, the fruit being dipped in melted paraffine. By this process the peaches are covered with a coating im- pervious to water, air, or acids, and, it is claimed by the patentee, will keep for several weeks. —-se--—___. A traip, run to make the time between New York and Cincinnati in twent hours, is expected thi« mor: suppose there are copies o: papers and that sort of thing aboant, neWs o1e day old is stale now-a-days. might issue an edition of the Commercial ¢ morning, with extracts from yest New York pers, If they containe! any- thing bewitching, but we have to lay ov: matier of greater va! The fast trains should be run the other way, so as to couvey the detalls of intelligence from the center of the country to the peopleon the Atlantic jer.— Cincinnali Commercial. The Field Marshal doesn’t seem to get at the true inwartness of the case. It is the New York morning papers that are picking up the chestnuts, ali nicely roasted. No mat- ter about the other hearts that ache away back in the center of the country. The news of the death of one of the notori- ous James brothers, of Missouri, is almost teo good to be true. The James and Youn- ger brothers have been the terror of the southwest for several years past, and have | Tobted and murdered almost without let or hindrance. A number of unsuccessfal at- tempts have been made to capture them, “nd in an encounter a year or two since be- tween them and the officers of the law. one ©f their number was kiliel. Heavy rewards Offered for their apprehension have induced private parties to undertake their arrest from time to time, but the outlaws have always made their escape. The Missouri Officials urge in extenuation of their failure to break up the gang the great danger of at- tempting their arrest. The outlaws have a Jarge number of passive allies in the section where they live, Who, through fear of bodily harm, keep them posted as to the move- ments of officers. They ride the tleetest horses in the country, and are, withal, un- erring marksmen, aud, figh‘iug after the In- dian fashion, can bring down their pursuers at very long range. They never allow treach- ery to go unavenged, and within the last five years have kliled men enough to stock small-sized cemetery. The fact that they have so long defied the authurities is cer- tainly a disgrace to the state of Missouri. —— WHAT WE HAVE Leagnep aT Last.— The editor of this paper bas been connect- ed with journalism, directly aad indirectly, Since 1815, and has learned at last what not to put in the columns of a newspaper.—San. Bard in Ala. State Journct. Cndoubtedly the great art of editing a newspaper is to know what to keep out of its columns; but it strikes us it bus taken | our migratory brother a long to find out the seeret. And now there is another thing for bim to learn, and that is, namely, to Wit:—tbat double and treble leaded editorials @rn‘t of as much account as they used to be. see The announcement has Leen heratded that ‘the ‘ast mail train to Chicago reached that City eight minutes ahead of time, and that for some reason cr other the engineer capped the climax by fainting—a singularly unmas_ euline performance. The Baltimore Ameri- can sees nothing to commesd in this, and Bays that where @ train runs ahead of time all precautions are disregarded and disaster is Invited; that it fs the highest possible rime against the laws of wise railroad man- @gement, and that the engineer guilty of it should receive certain dismissal. ‘view of the case.
