ae BUSINESS CHANCES. __ | s there } ee epee zi EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FRIDAY. September 17, 1975. CROSKY 8. NOYES........ Editor. Ses Circulation More than Double that of any other Daily Paper published in Washington, =———————— From the character of the platform adopted by the New York democratic convention, St Syracuse to-day, it is evident that there is @ slight difference of opinion on financial Questions between the democracy of that state and their brethren in Obio and Penn- Sylvania. But wait until the national dem- Ocratic convention meets next year, if you ‘Want to hear music. ie ‘The investigation by the board of Police loners touching matters that have Srown out of therobbery of Perry & Brother's Store last June, indicates, as far as it has one, & condition of things existing among those supposed to be the protectors of the public that is as dangerous as it is disgrace- ful. The conclusion of the case will be Swaited with interest. Meantime the evi- ence published in another column of this issue furnishes, if it can be relied on in any degree, some very suggestive reading. —se0e- — jw™ TILTON BUYDING assec! Sold Now that fast mail trains are an accom- Plished fact, it will be necessary for the tele- graphic news associations to reorganize their Service, especially in the large cities thatare closely connected by these rapid distributors Of intelligence. It will no longer answer, for example, for the news collector or agent of ‘One of the associations at New \ ork, Phila- delphia, or Baltimore, to content himself ‘with making up a rehash of the news in the Morning papers of either of thove cities and Bending it out in the form of “dispatches” for the afternoon journals of the country. Under existing mail arrangements these pa- Pers themselves are laid down at the princi- pal points within @ radius of two hundret miles from the piace of publication before the resume from their columns is filed in the telegraph office for transmission, and they @re delivered to exchanges as much as two hundred and fifty miles distant before the matter so made up has all been received by telegraph. This will never do. Improve- ments in the dissemination of news by tele- ‘graph must at least keep pace with the Pro- gress made fromi time to time in the mail service, or the public will soon learn to look upon it as an expensive piece of machinery that has outlived its usefulness, except for great distances. If it is intended that the telegraph shall maintain the supremacy it bas held so long, it will ba necessary for the EWS associations to entirely abandon their habit of clipping from the newspapers, and goto the original sources of information, to be sent off by wire on the instant. Not only this, but the telegraph companies them- selves will also be obliged to improve the quality of their service by more prompt transmission and quicker delivery of thedis- patehes entrusted to their care. Unless both these things are done, the mail under Post- master General Jewell will soon supersede the telegraph,so far at least as the large cities lying near together are concerned. ——_——_-<<2-____ Every right thinking person must com- mend the President's action in the Missis- sippi matter. He virtually says to Gov. Ames, “ Why don’t you help yourself, why bot exbibit more self-reliance, and use your own resources, instead of appealing for ex- traneousaid* Fancy the governor of Penn- sylvania or the executive of New York call- ing for United States bayonets to suppress domestic brotls. The former was recently called upon to meet organized violence in the mining regions of his state, and acted promptly and decisively, using his own troops to suppress it. Had he called for United States troops without exhausting his own resources he would have made himself ridiculous in the eyes of the whole country. In bis case, Gov. Ames has exhibited a timidity discreditable in the executive of a state. He certainly owes it to himself, no less than the government, to explain his hot baste in calling for troops, and the reason why he so long delayed answering thespecific queries of the Attorney General. A correspondent writing from Ohio of the political prospects there says Gov. Allen is full of the spirit of the game of brag, and has Inspired his subordinates with it to a re markable degree. ‘ Majority!” says Mr. Allen, raising his hand to give emphasis to his convictions, “why, sir, we expect from forty to sixty thousand; we wouldn't com promise to-day on twenty thousand.” The republicans are likewise confident, and in counties where the democrats expect great gains claim the same thing. The same cor_ respondent asserts that there are tens of thousands in Ohio to day who have not yet made up their minds bow they will vote, and the hesitation of many democrats to approve the inflation platform encourages the repub- licans in the belief that very many of this Class will cither refrain from voting or vote for ex-Gov. Hayes. Cut off from the world by Spa ish men-of-war an uish troops, but lit- Ue reliable ormation can be obtained from the Caban insurgents, who for seven or eight years past haye matr ed thelr inde- pendenee in the eastern portion of the island. Most of the intelligence comes through Spanish sources, and of course must be re- ceived with due allowance. A late letter from Havana says that Do» Joaquin Pardo, ‘An ensign of the Spanish navy, was recently assassinated !n Gibara. Hoe was with one of the gunboats there, and went ashore, taking his gun with the intention of shooting game in the neighboring country. After a day's Sport he went to a peasant’s hut in the vicin- ity of Gibara to rest for the pvight, and soon ‘@fter an insurgent band arrived and killed him. In revenge for this the Spaniards kiil- @d every man and woman in the house. It is now stated that 12,000 troops will be sent to Cuba September 23th, and 10,000 more in October, so that 22,000 men will be sent there as re-inforeements instead of 12,000, as was Previously announce. “The son of bis father,” and “a superanna- Bled ex-treasurer of the United States,” 1s the way the Lockport (New York) Journal -bharacterizes Mr. F.
