Other traius daily, exeept Sundays. ns DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN PRINTFR.— Mr. Thomas Rich, one of the best known printers in the District, diet at his residence, ih street, near E, yesterday afternoon, of psical disease which bas confined him to his room for about four months. He was in the 55th year of bis age. Mr. Rich was a native of this eity, and learned the art of printing here. He was for thirty-four years & member of the old Columbia Typographi- eal Societ also a member of Columbia Typozraphical Union, No. 161, from its form- ation to the day of bis death, and was for a Bumber of years the presiding officer of both of those associations. He probably was a member of more seeret orters than booed man in the District, holcing bis membership in Federai Lodge of Mason: Washington Lodge. Grand Lodge, Mt. bo. and Grand Encampment of Odd Fellows, Calanthe and Grand Tasgear Knights of Pythis, the Red Men. Brotherhood of the Union, Heptasophs, and Druids. In nearly all of these organiza- tions he had filled the position of secretary or scribe. and had represented the encamp- ment braneh of Odd Fellows in the Grand Lodge of the United States. For a number of years he was a clerk in the city post office, having previously served In the Mexican war. He was @ man of the strictest integ- rity. and while president of the Typograpni- eal Union during the agitation of the excit- Ing question of admitting colored printers into the Upion, he, by bis fmportant rulings, gained the respect and good will of both par- ties in the controversy. TESTIMONY FOR THE GOVERN- CLOSING MENT. Detective George McElfresh was recalled, and testified that he searched Brown at po- lice headquarters, August 3, and took from him $1,056. Cross-exam ined :—One note was a $500 bill; turned the money over to the clerk at police headquarters; could not swear to the money if _be was to see it. Detective John L. Sargent testified that he saw Erown when brought to police head- quarters; bad a conversation with him in re- gard to the robbery; witness said it was a bad position for Brown to be in, and asked why he did not come out and clear himsetr; because these parties were tn trouble it was no reason why he should not come out and fet the strength of it; Brown replied that Ottman had been a friend to him ia time of need, and that he would go to prison before he would squeal. Cross-examined:—He said nothing more than that remark. The prosceution here closed its case. Mr. Cook said he could not proceed for the present rntil the pleas fled were answered, ana the papers he had requested of the pros: ecution produced. District Attorney Wells said that they would be prepared to file an answer to-da and the court adjourned, fixing the continu. ance of the hearing for 2 o'clock this a(ter- noon. A meeting of the Board of Health was held lastevening. The frame building and pre ises 1025 3d street southwest, and frame baild- ing on Grace street, between High and Poto- mac streets, Georgetown, owned by Mrs. Mary A. Theeker, were declared to be nuis- pees, and ordered to be abated. A report was received from the health offi- cer on the communication of the odorless excavating company, complaining of the secant supply of barrels for night soil; reeom- mending, in view of many of the barrels being old and likely to become unservice- able, that 100 new barrels be ordered. Mr. Marbury moved that authority be given to purehase 75 barrels; agreed to. The rtof the registrar of vital statis- tes for the week ending September 4th was presented, showing total deaths #7, (4 less than the previous week,) of which number | 4 each were from consumption and cholera infantum, 4 typhoid fever, 6 pneumonia, 5 | | diarrhea, 2 dysentery, 3 infantile convul- sions. The deaths of whites (in estimated population of 115 000) numbered 46. and eni- red (in estimated population of 45,000) 51. The adults numbered 33-23 white and 15 col- | ored; minors, 23 whites and 36 colored; 17 | whites ard 32 colored under 3 years. There were but 5deaths of foreigners. EXCITING CHASE—A vicious billy goat chased a smal! colored boy from the Orphan Asylum to Nailor’s Hill, this afternoon, bu’ ting him continually along ‘the whole wa: aad finally knocked his victim iuto a ditch, and was goring him when some of the many pr ple who had followed the chase, came up and drove him off. The cries of the child ard the bleating of the goat as they flew through the streets attracted quite a crow of followers, and created covsiderable ex- citement in that part of the city. ATTEMPT TO WRECK A RAILROAD TRAIN. An unsuccessful attempt was made to wreck the Midland railroad passenger train due here this morning from Danville. Some cross ties were placed across the track near Burke's station, but fortanately a material train passed there about two hours before its usual time, and discovering the attempt frustrated il by removing the obstractions..
