Allen will be reelected in Ohio this fall, but the most reliable information frora that state indi- cates the election of the republican ticket by @ handsome majority. The latter party is united and aroused as it has been for many years past, and in aldition to this fact it isnow clear that it is not nearly as batly ¢ivided on the Mnancial Issne as was at first Supposed. On the other hand, it has become @ solid body, and gained strength from the outside, as well, on account of the free school or rather the religious issue which has been, &3 Senator Thurman complains, foolishly forced into the canvass by some of the cratic leaders. Indeed there ar grounds for believing that, while the mq question appears c , main issue, thedeep and strong spri action on the part of thoughtful and patr men is the preservation of the exe: Me school system of the state, the tion of which it is believed would speedily follow the suecess of the Ohio yeracy as now manipulated. Whether this will b controling consideration or not cannot of course be told at present, but it is quite ciear tuat it is going to have more infi ein the campaign than most persons have supposed. The speeches of the Indians before the Sioux investigating commission are very similar to those they delivered when in Washing ton—overflowing with verbosity and not em- bracing any complaints of a really serions nature. Red Cloud, for instance, talks more like a child than an Indian warrior and Statesman. He says he is Jealous because he has been down to the Spotted Tail agency and finds lumber there and several! buildings for the chiefs. As to Agent Saville, Red Cloud is reported as saying that he has no complaint ayainst him except that he, Sa- ville, raised an American flag at the agency last year against the wishes of his (Red Cloud's) people. The speech of Sitting Ball, to whom tke President gave a handsome rifle in recogui- Hon of kis efforts in behalf of peace, was of a Similar trifling character. He wanted the agent to distribute rations every ten days, instead of every seven days, because he thought they would last longer, and closed by saying that he didn’t like the sugar he received from the agent; he wanted white sugar, and the commission must look to it that they send white sugar hereafter. Great frauds may have been perpetrated at the Red Cloud agency, but it is plain to see that the members of the commission will be compelled to invoke the aid of somebody else besides the Indians if they wish to unearth them. destruc —--se-- —_____ As will be seen by the authorized state ment elsewhere in to-day’s paper, Messrs. Perry & Brother have no thought of aban- Coning the pursuit of, or compromising with, the criminals who recently robbed their store, nor of relaxing any effort to bring to Justice those who were criminally implicated in releasing the captured burglar. They re- cognize, @8 all good citizers should under such circumstances, that Ina case like this satisfaction of the demands of justice is due to the community at large, not less than to themselves; and they do not propose that apy effort shall he wanting on their part to bring abont that result. It is neediess to add taat In this commendable determination they will have the sympathy and active s.ip- port, not of the press alone, but of al! honest and properly disposed people. ————-+e2e-____ The Supreme Court of Virginia has recent- ly rendered a decision which ought to bs re- spected as a precedent by every court in the country. A woman who had been severely burned by “‘unexplosive” oil sued the grocer who sold it. The grocer pleaded in defence that he really believed the oi! unexple The court heid that as the use of the oi! for lighting purposes was not at all times and under all conditions absolutely free from all de ger of explosion, the defendant was not exempt from responsibility in selling it, ordered him to pay the plaintiff $12.50 aud costs. Now let the grocer sue the party who sold him the of] as ainexplosive. — -<22- Dr. W. A. Hammond, of New York, re- ceived @ couple of burgiars with a revolver the other night, and indulges in the fond hope that one of the villains was woundel. Re volvers are very useful at short range, but as an effective weapon for such emergencies commend us to a full-grown double-barreled gun, loaded with buckshot.
