The chairman, Mr. Hastings, refused to accept this verdict, and explained tothe jury that if they were of the opinion that the pris- oner believed that the cuttings belonged to him by right, there was no bad animus, and they must aequit him. The jury, thus being recharged, reconsidered their verdict, and in less than @ minute came to the same as before, but without the recommendation of mercy.
