‘EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THURSDAY. Jaly 15, 1875. CROSBY 8. ontberumataes Average Daily Ciralaton, 14,500 . Editor. The Star for the Sammer. Persons lecving the city for the summer or for | any portion of & may have THE Sram sen Oy | mati, postage prepaid, for such period of time G8} team in Ireland; they desire at the rate of 18 cents per week, 60 | ' cents per month, 81.80 for three months, or Z| for ri months. 87 Orders must tn all cases be accompanied by he money, and no paper sent longer than paid | for. @ur New Street Ratlways. A correspondent Inquires, in regard to the operation of track-laying going on along Fourth street northwest, why the track is placed so much above the level of the con- crete; and also what charter the road is made ander. Doubtless the track he refers to ts that of the Capitol, O Street and South Washington railway, (an awkward title, that should be changed to ‘ “Union” or “Central” railway.) as that company have comme: need operation: 1s and are push- ing the work rapidly forward. Ifthe road ts laid above the level of the street mentioned, Probably the concrete pavement, which is very imperfect on that street, is to be raiset to the levei of the new track. The route of this street railway is along First street west from the foot of ti toG street north; along G street to Fourth street; up Fourth street to O street; along O Street to Eleventh street; down Eleventh to E street; along E to Fourteenth street; down Fourteenth to Obio avenue; along Ohio ave- nue to Twelfth street; down Twelfth to Virginia avenue; along Virginia avenue to Maryland avenue; along Maryland avenue to First street west and the point of starting at the foot of the Capitol. This road was chartered by Congress at the Jest session, as, was also, “The Anacostia &ad Potomac river railway company,” (another clumsy title.) The route of the lat- ter road is from the northern end of the Navy Yar bridge, on Eleventh street east; along Eleventh street to M street south; along M Street to Third street east; along Third street toN street south; along N street to Water street; along Water street to Twelfth street West; along Twelfth street to Ohio avi enue; Along Obio avenue to Fourteenth street west; along Fourteenth street to the western ter- matnus of said road at the intersection of Pennsylvania avenue and Fourteenth street West; and also on M street south from Third Street east to Water strect, and on Eleventh street west from Water street to the inter- section of Twelfth and B streets southwest. The company are also anthorize1, whenever the navy yard bridge is replace! by a struc ture suitable for the passage of a street rail- Way, tocross to Uniontown, and to extend their road by the Good Hope road to the Dis- trict line. When the two roads deseribed above are built, the convenience of street railway travel will be increased very largely, as will beseen by reference to the routes indicate1. 202+ THE GALAXY for August, though hardly e7nal in interest to the number for the pres- ent month, is neverthless an excellent issue. The Baltimore Gazette is unwilling to con- cede that Hami!ton, whom it calls the Balti- more and Ohio railway candidate for gover- nor, is so far ahead that his nomination by the democrats is certain. It says: “The truth is simply this, that Mr. Hamilton ts already beaten, if he got all the doubtful Votes and those who are to be elected on Sat- urday next.” and gives figures from the counties tosupport its position, which figures foot up &s follows: Anti-Hamilton—Charles, St. Mary's, Carroll, Baltimore city, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, Caroline, Wor- tester, Somerset, and Wicomico counties, 58. For Hamilton—Garrett, Allegany, Washing ton, Frederick, Montgomery , 3. Doubtfai— Calvert, Prince George's, and Dorchester, 11 Yet to vote—Harford, Howard, Anne Arun- del, and Baltimore connty, 15. Making a total of 110, of which 56 are necessary to nominate. The Gaze‘te also says: “It is im- Possible to see how Mr Hamilton ean in- ¢rease his votes more than ten at the out- side, So that the voters in Harford, Balti- more, and Anne Arundel counties need not mind the count made by the railway organs and their agents.” The Sun now concedes that later advices Molify its claim of 51 Yotes for Hamilton, and gives the fol ton—Allegany 5, 5. Mar, The same paper says: “At resent there is no substantial ground on Which to estimate the probatie decision of the state convention in regard to the candi- date for governor any more than its decision for controller or attorney general. Of the four counties yet to hold conventions, How- ard is conceded to Mr. Carroli, Anne Aran- del is said to be for Governor Groome, and Baltimore and Harford counties have ma je ho indication whatever of their preferences.” ————~<ee-__ The cotton states’ Congress at Raleigh, yesterday had under consideration the pro- posed international exchange between the manufacturers of Great Eritian and the Grangers of the United States, but finaliy left the whole atter to be disposed of by the National Grange. There is evidently considera e doubt in th minds of many Grangers 4s to what action they ought to take on this important proposition. They profess rot tot ile men,and the exchange referred to cannot ve effected without the intervention of a powerful cor- yoration. This corporation is the Mississippt Valley Trading Company, of Great Britain, which is said to have a large capital, and which has been Indorset by the congress of the co-operative societies of England. The committee of the National Grange, after careful consider: also indorsed this Corporation, but took no action be- yond recommending it to state and subordinate granges, preferring to leave 1 system of exchange itself. The scheme opposed by the athe question of a gene: to the National ¢iran; Will Of course be viote: manufacturing interests in ) this country, and it be shouid carried iato execution will undoubtedly lead to important changes in Our present tariff laws. As the ease stands, it looks as if, while both the co-operators of Great Britain and the grangers of the United States might be benefitted to some extent, the corporation which proposes to act as the agent of exchange will profit more largely than any one else. One of the newspapers, referring to this company, styles it “The Future Grinding Monopoly of the World,” nd such it may turn out in the end to be. 22+ THE PELESIDENT AND THE WAR Urox Tre WHISKY RING.—The Republican of to- day se¥s: ee Se re rap rig mgr raid wpon wi Ting Presideut Grant at once evinced & decides interest even in the the fected parties and the removal of incompe- jentor Ineulpated officers.
