This is one reason perhaps why the Americans declimed to shoot at an Inter- national mateh at Wimbledon, for had they done so the situation would have virtually Stcod a select eight of Great Britain against New York alone, and not against the United States. Probably there are many men in the United States to-day who are the equals, and some of them possibly the superiors as marksmen, of the New York eight, and in &n international match it wonld evidently be unfair for marksmen from a single state to represent the whole union, without some- thing like an organized movement to secure the very best riflemen in the country. The war in this country served as a school for thousands of sharp-shooters, most of whom Were armed with rifles of the best manufac. ture. Add to the survivors of these organiza- tions the hunters of the west, whose living to @ great extent depends upon their steadi- ness of alm and accuracy of vision, and we undoubtedly have the greatest number of good shots of any country in the world. As @ rule, however, it has been demonstrated that the classes referred to, while good shots and very far above the average, cannot suc- cessfully compete with men who haye spent more than half a life time in constant rifle practice, with a view to improvements cal- culated to render arms as nearly perfect as possible, and who are in the true sense of the ‘Word “experts.” A writer in the New York Times, evidently an Irishman, gives perhaps the best reason why the Americans did not enter the contest for the Eleho shield at Wimbiedon. The shield was contributed by Lord Elcho, says this correspondent, to be shot for by teams representing England, Scotland and Ireland, and is to be held in trust by the winners for one year, when it is to be returned to the National Rifle Association, to be again competed for. A correspondent of the Chicago Tribune does Bot believe with that paper that the Ameri- can Team are now the champions of the World, because for thirteen years the Eng- lish, Scoteh and Irish have competed for the Elcho shield, during which time the Irish carried it off but once (in 1873). They then challenged the Americans; but, for some Teason, the match only came off last fall. A couple of months before they came over, however, they had been last in the Wimble- don comtest,—the shield having been won by the Scots, in whose hands it is at present. The Americans last fall therefore simply beat the poorest score made at Wimbledon in 1874, but in the absence of the scores it is impossible to compare their shots with those of the English and Scotck teams. The fact is undisputed, however, that the score r~ cently made at Dollymount by the Ameri- can tear beat any score ever made at Wim- bledon. So it is not unreasonabie to suppose that had they entered the contest this year at the latter place they would have made quite as good a record as they did in Ireland and proved themselves beyond e¢avil the ebampions of the world. ————_~ee--___ jaryland Politics, Just now a pretty animated contest {s going on throughout the state of Maryland to se- eure the democratic nomination for Govarn- crship. County conventions are now being held for the purpose of choosing delegates to the State nominating convention, to assem- bie in Baltimore July 21. According to the Sun, the slate of chances Indicates the so far developed strength ot the three gubernatorial candidates as follows: Carroll—Baltimore city 21, Howard 3, total 24. Hamilton—Washington 5, Frederick 6 Allegany 5, Garrett 3, Montgomery 4, Prince George 4, Carroll 5. Queen Anne 3, St. Mary 3, Charles 3, total 41. Groome—C secil 4, Kent 3, Calvert 3. total 10. Of course it will be re- Mmembered that nearly all of these figures are Hable to be sponged out by combinations ex- isting in favor of the several candidates for attorney general and controller. To-day Conventions to elect delegates to the state convention will be held in Queen Anne, Montgomery, Garrett, Caroline, Talbot, Charles, St. Mary, Wicomico, Worcester and Calvert counties. To-morrow delegates Will be elected in Prinee George, and Thurs- day in Allegany. Other county conventions for the same purpose will be held as follow: Howard county, July 20; Harford, July 1 Baitimore, July 1%; Anne Arundel, July 19. ——_-re ee -___. During the extremely cold weather last Winter, when ice was forming in the north- ern lakes and rivers at the rate of three and four inches a night and melting searcely any for weeks at a time, everybody thought that lee would be cheap this summer, and that there could be no possible pretext for a rise in price, no matter how hot the weather might get. But this was a mistake, as con- sumers in Washington have already found to their cost. The opportunity to squeeze the public a little more, afforded by the late heated term, was too tempting to be resist. ed, by at least one of our principal local com- panies,—if, Indeed, we really have more than. one. Accordingly an additional tenth of a cent per pound was put on the price a few days ago, When the weather was so hot that ice Was longer a luxury, but @ necessity that everybody must have, no matter whether the price was reasonable or extor- tionate. Ten cents ona hundred pounds does not seem very much, when spoken in an off-hand way, but it counts ap pretty rapidly when it comes to be subtracted from the seanty wages of the cay-laborer and the needle-woman. And it counts up pretty fast, too, in swelling the profits of the company that thus takes advantage of the necessities of the public. ‘Whether the additional gain is worth what it costs tm loss of respect and confidence is another questiva. oe -—___ ‘The great unwashed of New York are grad- ually being cleansed. During the week which ended Sunday last no less than 63,402 persons patronized the public baths in that city. The largest number bathing in any one day was 16,264. It would seem that this number ought to embrace a very large per cent. of the fil- thiest element in the city, but the trouble is that many of this class seldom indulge in the luxury of @ bath, even when they can do so without money and without price. It is safe (> say that of the whole number bath- ing du. ¢ the week (69,402), fully half were persons who make cleanliness a virtue, and that those who needed & bath most were just the ones to stay away. ———ce-__. The New York Evening Post calls upon the obituary muse of the metropolis of Judge “Wm. D. Kelley's own state to write his epi- soph, and furnishes the same as follows: “Inflation sore long time he bore, Three-sixty-fives were vain; Repematien anaes in nd freed him from his pain.
