SMITH!—The Ballimorcan, giving an ac- count of an auction sale of flne faruitare whieb took place in our neighbor city a few days ago say Quite an amusing little episode occurred during the sale. Among the heaviest par- chasers Was @ gentieman named “Smith.” As piece after piece of splendid furniture was cried out at seemingly fabulous prices to “Smith, buzz ran Wrough the crowd, and several ladies remarked in rather audible whispers, that they did not believe such sales were bone fide, for the reason that Smith was no name at all, even honored wi! the prefix of John. It tad tees announced by the auctioneers that there would be no “by-bidding,” and so ——— were the inti- mations about Smith, that the auctioneer, atthat gentleman's request, permitted him to make an explanation. He proved to bea tall fine looking gentleman of 55 or 40, with a pleasant countenanee and any amount of sel-possession. He stated in tones sufficient- ty loud to be heard in every portion of the sy; aclous Wareroom, that bis name was E. P Smith: and that Washington, D. C., was bia lace of resitenee. He was furaishing a nésorme dwelling in the nation’s capital, and he Lad the means to gratify bis wishes inthis regard. He said he was @ mail con- tractor; WAS worth $250,000, and all of $50,000 Of this amount was now to his credit in the | Third National Bank of Baltimore.
