Here the steamerdrew up, and the party disembarked for a hasty survey of the grounds and improvements; after which, Most of them again took the boat for the Great Falls, some three miles above, where the party again seattered, some to enjoy a ramble about the ledges and rocks of the falls. and others to look at the improvements ade by Col. Samo about the water works. the courtesy of the superintendent, Mr. Sullivan, the gate-house was unlocked and the manner of regulating the flow of water throngh the conduit was explained. A trip was made to the dam which diverts the water to the mouth ef the conduit, and af- terwards to the grounds belonging to the government, which have been enclosed, graded and ‘handsomely improved. A new dwelling-house for the superintendent and employes is now in process of building. It is of cut gray Seneca stone from the govern- ment quarry, and whea completed will be a handsome building, costing about $4,000. The boat returned at 3 o'clock to the ice company’s works, and after various diver- sions, the announcement of dinner drew the entire party together again in the capacious dining rooms where three rows of tables were spread out ladened with refreshments, which would have been a credit to auy hotel in this city. The hungry crowd fell to, and a lively rattling of dishes, knives, forks, and glasses were kept up until all were satisfied, when tables were clearet for toasts and speech- making. The president of the company, Mr. Jobn Riswick, was at the head of the table. with Secretary Beiknap on his right and Ben Perley Poore on his left. Mr. Van Ris- wick addresed the guests in the following brief but appropriate words: Gentlemen:—It affords me much pleasure to have it In my power to welcome you, on be- half of the Great Falls Ice Company, to this. the scene of its earliest enterprise, and a con- siderable source of its present supplies. Your presence here in such goodly numbers attests the favor with which the citizens of the Dis- trict reward the unremitting efforts of the company to effectuate the pu: of its organization, at the same time it is an evi- dence—a most cheering evidence—of the ready appreciation and active support that awaits In our community upon domestic en- terprise, when honestly directed to tne pub- le good.
