EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: HURSDAY. 6, 1975. Average Daily Circulation, 14,500 | Money Wasted in Irregular Adver- tising. The New York Timer has & sensible article on the absunt style of advertising practiced #0 commonly, such as the use of “circulars,” ete., which, so far from drawing custom, ab- solutely repels it by prejudicing the persons upon whom these annoying missives are in- Mieted. They are thrust into one’s hands in the street; or into his letter box; or the ser- vants are kept continually running to the door to receive the delusive envelopes, which | have the appearance of enclosing invitations to dinner, or such like pleasant entertain- Ments, but which, on being opened, prove to contain an advertisement of some nostrum orware. The disgusted recipient naturally resolves that the obtrusive vendor shall never get a penny of hismoney. In thisconnection the Times remarks: “For when probable purchasers, decent, table folk with money. wish for any- thing, and do not know exactly where to go for it, they look into the advertising columns of some respectable newspaper, and there, under its proper head, they tind what they want—that is, if the dealer has been wise enough to advertise in a discreet and profit- able way, instead of wasting his substance upon a sort of announcement which, at best, is useless, and which, with the better class of buyers, might cast suspicion upon him. Newspapers have become the acersdited and well-established medium of all kinds of an- houncements to the Fate. From a la- mation of the head of the government to the announcement of a house-maid that she ce, communication with the pub- urally and properly conducted through newspapers. It could not well be otherwise, considering the place which the daily newspaper holds in motern civiliza- tion. Advertisements in newspapers have, therefore, a propriety. a sort of legitimacy, and a weight whieh pertain to advertise- ments in noother form. A discreetly-worded advertisement in a respectable paper is in itself a sert of promise of discretion and re- spectability on the part of the advertiser. irregular and fanciful advertisements, on the contrary, are likely to do something at least to cast suspicion, in these very partic- ulars, upon the person who makes use of them.” Itis charitable at least to suppose that all the suspicious parties gunning after Prince Bismarck from time to time are afilicted withdementia. For years past the White Honse has en the objective point of all sorts of rants not included), and arrests have been frequent.
