There are three tickets in the fleld, republican, inde- pendent republican and prohibition, and democratic. The independent republican ticket was nominate! by a large num- ber of bolting republicans and the prohibi- tionists, under the impression that their nominees were in favor of a stringent liquor law. It is now stated that none of the can- @idates for governor are in favor of probini- tion. The prohibitionists hope to prevent a choice by 4 triangular fight, and throw the election into the iegislature. The reguiarre- publicans, however, are of the opinion that iheir candidate will have a clear popular majority. The candidates for governor are, Henry Lippitt, regular republican; Rowland Hazan, independent republican, and Chas. R. Cutler, democrat. The republican ma- jorities at late elections have been as follows: In 1872, for governor, 1,155; in 1872, for Presi- dent, 8,39; In 1873, for governor, 5,870; 1 1574, for governor, 10746. In the legislature elect- ed last spring the republicans had a majori- ty of 53 on joint ballot. ——____-+ee-—_____ The meeting yesterday in Annapolis to take action in the matter of reducing—or otherwise—the tolls on the Cheseapeake and Gute canal has not done much to sight, how- ever it may be with faith. Considered in it- self, it was to needy and hungry boatmen and others dependent on the canal a mere Barmecide’s feast of empty dishes. Mr. Ban- non appears to have spoken early and often, but very unsatisfactorily. especially when he undertook to pooh-pooh the action of the Pennsylvania railroad as only an effort “to scare boatmen into the belief that they can carry coal as cheap as the canal.” If Mr. Bannon was sincere in this mistake let him put the point of the “only trying” operations of the Pennsylvania Central to Mr. Garrett aud get an idea of what Mr. Garrett's expe- rience is with regard to it.
