The onerous natare of this law, as construed by the law fMicer of the Distriet, took everybody by surprise when the original sehedule was pro- muigated, and it was natural that the pro- test should be lond and earnest. Again, it isa mistake that this isan outery Sgainst a personal tax by those who want to throw the burdens of taxation upon real es- tate. By looking over the signatures to the call for the citizens’ meeting, it will be seen that the signers are heavy real estate gwn- ers, and that, with a large proportion ef them, their real estate interests are really heavier than their personal property inter- ests. But it is the particularly sweeping, in- «tisitorial and unequal manner in which this personal tax is levied that makes it so offensive to the citizens as a body. There Was no outcry against the old personal tax here, which was simple and intelligible in form, and placed a tax upon what is called visible personal property, articles of luxury, &e. And there would have been no protest how against a personal tax of this character, meverate in rate, and easy of assessment and collection. — -+02- — The Elections this Week. The states hobling elections this week are Connecticut, Michigan, and Rhode Isiand The elections in Connecticut and Rhode Island are for s Officers, and in the first named state for members of Congress also. The result in Connecticut, which holds an lection to-day, is looked for with more than ordinary interest sinee the state has been Vigorously canvassed and political parties are pretty evenly divided. For two years pest. however, the state has gone democratic so far as the governorship is concerned; in 183 by 5,81, and in 1874 by 6,782 majority. The republicans, confronted by 6,782 demo- ratic majority last year, have made a vigor- ous canvass, ant have hal on the stump some of their most effective speakers. They elosed their canvass on Saturiay with a big demonstration at the opera house in Hart- ford, Postmaster General Jewell presiding, and ex-Speaker Blaine, General Hawley and others addressing the mecting. The demo- erats also held their final mass meeting in Hartford on the sa lay, being addressed by Senator Eaton and others The following are the tickets, the persons whose names are marked with a © having been renominated Republican. Jas. Lioyd Greene Gov Charles L. English. org... sioseph 3 R. Hawley. Kellogg. Demoerati R.Ingersoll. . hs Ps pe Sill. James Phelps. i Mi Starkweather. L. S. Foster. 4. Dr. Robert Hubbard. -H.Barnum. The probibitionists have nominated He ary ©. Smith and J.G. Baldwin for governor and lieutenant governor respectively, but beyond this have made no nominations. In 1871 the State sent to Congress a delegation of three republicans and one democrat, and in 1873 the political composition of the delegation was the same. In both, the republican majorities were small, except in the third district, where they rangel from 1,400 to 1.200. The democratic majorities in the fourth district for two terms past have run from 1,000 up to 1,700. Besides the state gov- ernment and members of Congress, slate senators, members of the stats house of rep- resentatives, judzes of probate, county sheriffs, and other minor officers are to be chosen to-day. The contest will be a close one. «ad the prohibition vote, which has doubled itself for three years past, adds to the uncertainty. The election in Michigan. which takes place to-tay, is for two judges of the supreme court, two regents of the state university, judges of the circuit court, and county and municipal Officers. The republicans think if they can poll a fall vote they will carry their state tieket by 25,000; but they fear that enough of their voters will remain at home to greatly reduce their majority. The republican ma- jorities for governor since and including 1x70 bave range! from 2,000 000. There are but two tickets in the fleld this year, demo- cratic and republican. Little Rhody, which has been in a bad hu- mor for some time past, has managed to get up three tickets, regular republican, bolting republican and democratic. The bolt grew out of the probibitory liquor law, and when, ity, the republicans nominated eut of the law, a large and influen- on of the party rebelled, and in con- the prohibitionists nominated This puts a singular aspeet se, and renders possible the success moerats, who have been defeated for ber of years Laan by majorities ranging Gov'r. é * ¥ Philadelphia and itimore papers continue their long and loud complaints over the filthy condition of | the streets of those cities. Mr. Speaker I Blaine in his New Haven Speech included Colorado in the Presidential electoral vote of 1576. This is a mistake. By the enabling act passed at the last session Colorado cannot be admitted till the second session of the 4ith Congress, vuich is of course after the election. The elecioral vote, therefore, stands at 366, of which 184 is a ma- jority. ——____-<e--______ The very decided advance in railway aod other securities in the New York stock mar- Ket cannot be attributed wholly to specula- tive combinations, for the receipts of the railroads for the past two months are con- siderably tn excess of those for the corre- sponding period of last year.
