EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY. April 3, 1S73_ ‘The Possible Future of the mal. Canal af the meet- ing to take plac ext. at which the Maryland Board of Public Works, the Board of Directors of the Canal Company and a deputation from Cumberland wil! compare notes and, we hope, come to some conclusion beneficial to the and numerous people who depen! upon that Work. It is stated that at this mecting Mr. John W. Garrett, President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad company, will be present; indeed, it has been broadly asserted that the meeting was put off in order that he might take part in it. We rather opine, neverthe- less, that Mr. Garrett's decision, whatever It rhall be, will have been made and registered considerably before Tuesday; so that his presence will be rather for form sake than for any real necessity int. The raid that has long been ma'ting upon the Canal and its various interests, bat which has eome to a climax this spring, leals inevitably to speculation as to the under- lying motive for it. Suppose the the Canal to be so reduced in the estimation as to appear not much better than nothing; that the people of the State shall be ied to a desire to be finally rid of it, and show a willingness to dispose of it atalmost any . What then? May not the Baltimore read generously step in and relieve the State of its nien at somewhere between a tenth and a fifth of what ft has cost How kind that would be; how mag- ; and altogether in keeping with rupulous and unselfish policies for which the giant corporations of these days are soremark. 3 Does anybody suppos* ation of affairs, the canal wou d fare badly as the property of the Baltimore road? If anybody does so think Judging from what has appeared in the past, we cannot share in the opinion. We think the canal would become @ live conduit of busy trade, instead of a dead diteh; indewt, its fortunes would shine with more than prismatic eifulgenee. And, in the long run, it might tarn out, after all, that the deprecatory talk about canals was not quite the correctest thing in the world; for it so happens, any way, that their steel rails do not wear out very fast, nor their costly locomotives require frequent renewal. It is also true that a canal—we mean its ma- terial essener—is lik ot wine, crowing betterand better with age, with this further thing, that the expenditure of human life upon it is a minimum compared with the holocaust offered up to the genius of the rail. that, in such a sita- interests | THE GAZETTE Will be deeply sensational TO MORROW, ning laberate particniars of oLD HAUNTED HOUSE qn New Jermey avenue, with » Wood Cut of the cay site atenctive topics of METROPOLICAN | Pure Kennebec and Great Falls Ive the following prices ices THE GAZETTE ts the best ad: | prpry POUNDS ant OVER, THIRTYC PER HUNDKED. On Monday Connecticut elects a full state tieket an Congressmen. Last year the state gave a democratic majority for Governor of about 2.800. This year both parties seem to feel about equal confidence of success. The democrats have renominated Gov. Ingersoll, and he bas administered the duties of his office so well during the year that he will un- questionably prove a very strong candidate. The republicans have nominated Mayor Greene, of Norwich, a “radical republican,” anda man of bizh personal reputation and great popularit his locality. The proba bility seems to be that the democfats may succeed in re-electing Governor Ingersoll, but that the republicans will carry the con- gressional elections. ing the Chesapeake and Otiio Canal, of an unusually striking character. It is ably and very pointedly written, and makes state- ments that, if they can be substantiated, will Create a sensation throughout Maryland and the country at larze.
