Ne “Paying” Gold in the Black Hills. It will be rather rough on the gold seekers who are rushing to the Black Hills in viola- tion of our treaties with the Indians, should or lose their scalps in a wild goose chase. A correspondent of the Chicago Tribune in Lowell, Nebraska, discusses the Black Hillis question in a practical, logical way, and con- clusively shows the wheie thing, as re to be “a palpable, barefaced fraud, which will not bear the test of reason, experience, or common sense; and Professor Hayden, the Well-known geologist and explorer, writes to an intimate personal friend in Chicago ad- vising him not to take stock in the assertion that there is gold in the Black Hills worth going there to dig. The Tritame correspondent says of the re- ports of Witcher and Gorton, the men who brought the first news of these gold discov- eries to Sioux City, that they evidently never sawamine. They report having discovered ‘gold and silver lodes from the grass-roots to the bed-rock.” This is simply an absurdity,— an impossibility. Gold and silver lodes are not scattered promiscuously through the al- Iuvial formation in’ which they are said to have been found; but are well-defined veins of ore, extending into the depths of the earth toa distance beyond that man has ever yet been able toexplore. It, therefore, requires ho great practical knowledge or sclentic at- tainments to satisfy any one that these gen- tlemen have used the truth with parsimo- nious frugality. They sawno unfriendly In- dians, had provisions to last until June, and game was plenty; and yet they tramped throagh the snow hundreds of miles after reinforcements. This illogical, inconsistent, and unreasonable. Two parties from the same camp are said to have arrived at different times at Cheyenne, and make different reports,—one claiming that the recent supposed discoveries are emanations of a disorilered fancy, or delib- while the other says that not half of the truth has been told. They exhibit specimens of the gold which they panned oat of the cravel near the grass-roots; and. for fear this might be doubted, they exhibit as proof the veritable gross-roots intermixed With the precious metal. Any man that has ever seen a pan of dirt washed or panned, as isdone in prospecting for cold, will at once recognize the utter impossibility of such a statement being true. In panning out, the lightest material is washe! out first, and afterwards the heavier gravel; the gold, if there is any, being the heaviest, remains in the par. Other statements and explanations credited to these supposed miners are quite &s senseless, incongruons, unreasonable, and impossible. These persons, if their savings have been correctly reported, are practicing upon the credulity of the peopie. They evidently haye had no experience in ™mining, or they would have told of con- ditions that might have been true, and transactions that might have occurred. If it were knowm)beyond a doubt that the deposits of gold Claimed were at the places and in the quantities stated, the severity of the weather during the winter would have Prevented the operations described. Every in shallow placer-dig. ¥ is distributed from the surface to the bei-rock, mining operations cease altogether during the winter months. in cold latitudes. With the thermometer at ‘2 degrees low zero, as it is represented to have been, as it in all probability was, how could one mine waist deep in water— even if this were possible under any circum- stances? If these diggings were what they are representel, and the fortunate discov- erers miners, they would have spent the win- ter in running drain-ditches, and making siuice-boxes, and getting in shape to com. mence work when spring opened. Therefore the correspondent comes to the conclusion that the story is a “palpable, bare-faced fraud.” It might be suggested to the conductors of spelling matches that hereafter they select words in common use, and not unusual or technical words which are seldom used by anybody. Of the latter class of words are two given out by President Gallaudet last night—“«yme” and “syzygy.” The great Majority of persons participating in these contests can boast of nothing more than a g00d common school education, and are not supposed to be familiar with many technical words. If a class composed of students in astronomy were to be examined, it would of course be in orter to introduce technical words pertaining to that science. The same principle would apply im case of botanical or other students pursuing particular branches Of science. What most of the contes ts Want is to know how to spell words in ordi- mary use in writing and speaking. After they acquire this knowledge they will per- haps be ready to tackle such orthographical monstrosities as rZys Meanwhile, nm to make use of technical words thedictionaries will furnish them with the proper orthography. As a rule, however, President Gallaudet’s selec. tiogs las} night were very cood. — +s0-- The New York World seems to take a blue view of business prospects in that city. According to that paper the season is the dullest ever known there, surpassing that of last spring, which followed immediately upon the panic, and was thought to be as had 28 it possibly could be. The dullness dees not seem to be confined ¥ Special section of the city or to any particular business. It is a general business stagnation, a sort of afler-wave of the panic of 73. There are about one-third more buildings now open to rent than there were @ year ora year and 4 half @go; and the temporary rentals are in many eases at a reduction of between thirty and forty per cent. It seems to be evident, by the way. that not only in New York, but throwchout the country the rate of rents must come down permanently from war prices Acall ~ see: is being circulate! to-day for 2 pub- lie meeting at Lincoln Hall on Monday even- ing next, “for the purpose of taking such ac- tion as may be deemed proper in regard to the Tax Law recently passed by Congress.” ‘The cat! seems to be signed by all to whom it is presented, particularly by business men, fnd the meeting will doubtless be a large and influential assembiace —_ ses Tt will be seen by the extracts from the Cumberland, Md., papers we print elsewhere that the prospects of the coal trade on that Work this year are of the gloomiest. The rail- Yoad companies reduced the freight on coal twenty-five cents per ton, and the canal managers, with their usual feebleness in an emergency, meet this by a reduction of only eight cents on toll and wharfage. The conse- Quence is tha: leading mining companies are Sending coal by railroad which it was in- tended to ship by canal, and the probability is that the canal will do no coal trade at all this year, unless a wiser and more liberal policy is adopted and a further reduction made in tolls. rien Reena pcs Secretary, be a cent. > added paid tax rear. af March.
