It was showa that mill, Thal produced agnaro bag with Haltiday’s name in the corner; but this was not presented in court. It was attempted to show that Mr. Halliday, the night hetore he failed had pa> chased a large bill of goods from some tidi- vidual. After proving his insufficiency for secular business Mr. Halliday hat become a city missionary at the Fiv a rdian Honie and several minor charities Mr. Fullerton strictly examined him as to his financial probity in keeping the accounts of one of these institutions, and it is under- stood that on the rebuital an effort made to show that Halliday is impeachable as vo affairs of administration. After Mr. Halitday was dismissed he wrapped a silk handkerchief around his throat, for he was hoarse all the morning, and hastily left the court. Then Ressie Tar- ner was cailed, and the audience almost stool up to get a glimpscof that diminutive young person. She made her way to the stand oa the arm of Brother Cauldwell, kissed the book, and proceeded to deliver with great volubility a mass of spontaneous and often obscene evidence with much mitatery ani zest. Tho witness, dressel well enough to feel at ease, leaned forward on her fan, and when giving conversations as they occurrel imitated the tones of other people and raised her own voice to express just how she said certain things to Tilton in rebuke of his con- duet. In the middle of the afternoon a por- tion of the testimony of Miss Tarner was en. tirely unfit for publication. Tne audience and ‘the jury were somewhat diseoncerted With its plainness, and Mrs. Tilton leaned down and wrote on her tablets. It would appear by the anxiety of Judge Porter not to dismiss Miss Turner when she was threat. ened with a fainting spell that he hal ex- pected to conclude her testimony yesterday. Still the week was a favorable one for the defense. ONE STRONG WITNESS, Tom Cooke, the newspaper corcespondent, made @ strong point against the plaintiff teslifying that Tilton and the Woodhull both urged him to write for the Golden A) and the Woodhull & Claflin paper and work up the scandal. A great point in the plaintiff's statement Was that Tilton did his best to suppress the scandal; that he labored day in and day oat to keep the world igaorant of Mr. Beechera alleged infamy. Cooke’s evidence shows that however inclined Tilton may have been to pursue Libis policy, so fras he (Tilton) Ye Co. cerned, he was Willlag enough to give details to the world, provided it could ‘te done through the ium of some sensa- tional reporter, as he believed Cooke to be. Tilton, of course, was not to be known in the matter. Cooke would take all the dility upen himself. This evidence went further. It invited tue inference that the famous Woodbull scandal publication was the inspiration directly or indirectly of Tit. ton himself. The most important witness of the week was certainly Cooke. He that Tilton ad Woodhull were in collusiea, and that Tilton, instead of seeking to sup- press the scandal, soughtevery means to give it to the world trough some other hands than his own. BESSIE TURNER. Bessic Turner is relied on by the defence te show @ condition of relations between Tilton and his wife that would justify either in go- ing out from the common household aad practising free love. The weaknessof an ar- ment that aims to impeach Tilton’s vir- tue or thatof his wife to exculpate Beecher apparent, but it is Impossible to conceal the effect on the jury. The jury will be called on to render a v@rlict of #190,000 in fa- vor of the plaintiff; but if this evidence ts de- signed to show Uhat the one principal in the action is no better than the other, and there is proof that the ove who charges adultery is guilty of adultery himself, then, indeed, the damages may be calculated ina differeat light. Miss Bessie Turner gave evidence that was directed entirely toward affecting this question of damages. Bessie Turner's evidence, at the utmost, will go to show that the plaintiff to this action does not come inte court with clean bands. That ts all.
