vw Reading Matter on Every Page. Largest Circulation in the District | Daily Cireatation 5 3 the Sag Bening: Star Date. jonday, March Where is the Man? It is time, the Cincinnati Gazetic thinks, to begin to look about for a proper Presidential candidate for 1X76; and that paper sets forth in portentous array the requisites for that office, The nominee must be a man witha national reputation, and a character, both political and personal, which will command the re- spect of the country; which will have ro breaches for assault, and will make his sup- porters seeure from the liability of being thrown upon the defensive. He must have the intellectual acquirements, the experience in public affairs, and the demonstrated eapacity which entitle him to the rank ofa statesman. He must have a history of fidelity to the principles of freedom, of emanci- pation, of equal political rights, and of the supremacy of the national constitution He must be a man of such natural elevation of views as will accept the Presidential of- fice, not as a reward of merit; not asa thing for personal enjoyment ; not as a prize from which to dispense to personal friends; not even as a means of rewariing his political supporters, or of supporting the party which elected him ; but as a high public trust, tobe administered for the general welfare. He must be a man of such firmness of character and such befitting official reserve as will keep the base order of managing politicians at a proper distance ; will abash the office-seek- ing horde; will lift the affair of appointments from the control of wire-workers and the strife of personal favoritism, and will remit it to be regulated by rules making the public service the first consideration. He musthave a dignity of conduct which will give a high tone to the Administration and to Congress, and will tolerate no official or per- sonal associates whose reputation does not entitle them to the country’s respect. His nomipation must come, not through combinations of managers; not through any scheme to direct a Presidential succession or create a political dynasty; but as the result Of the deliberation of the people. He mast bave such statesmanlike qualities that in bis course in the affairs of the untranquil sections he will regard neither personal nor party favorites or fortunes, but will consider only the establishment of the principies of constitutional liberty. He must be a man whose reputation for statesmanship and for bigh patriotic aims will be accepted as a response to the popular longings for peace, security. the reign of law, and tne subordi- pation of political disturbance and animos- ities to the things of material prosperity. He must carry to the national mansion house the personal dignity of George Wash- ington and John Adams and their families, instead of any representation of political demagogism, shoddy vulgarity, or back- ‘Woods uncouthness. ‘This is a formidable array of qualities de- manded for the coming candidate. The man Will be rather hard to find in our present crop of statesmen. The Gazette does well in en- tering upon the search at this early day. P. S.—It occurs to us after all, that the truly good Deacon Richard Smith may be the man to fill this bill, but of course the Gazette could not, with becoming modesty, say 80. ———-+02--___ About the Grangers. Tt bas been asserted that the grange move- ment is in its decadence, and that the inter- est which was formerly so generally felt in the order is rapidly dying out. The facts searcely justify the assertion. The monthly bulletin of the national! grange, dated the Ist instant, shows the total number of subordi- nate granges in operation as 2,5i7, the ag- gregate membership of which might be esti- mated ali the way from 1,250,000 to 2,000,900. The number of subordinate granges organ- ized in 1874 was 11,911, or about 2,000 more than were oganized during the six years’ ex- istence of the order prior to the year named- The amount received during the year 1574 by the national grange from subordinate granges in the shape of charter fecs, &c., was $179,005, against £1€1,615.43 received prior to that year. During the existence ot the order % granges have consolidated, 31 have become defunct, and 111 have had their charters revoked. The cost of materials sent out to sudor- dinate granges by the national grange in 1874 was £70,451.90. This data, which is ob- tained from a trustworthy source, is pret- ty conclusive evidence that the grangers are neither dead nor sleeping, and that the accessions to this order last year were larger than those of all previous years combined. The time, of conrse, must come when there will be a falling off in the num- ber of new granges organized, since in many of the siates such organizations exist in every county and there is no room for more. Towa, which for years led all the other s in the number of granges, now stands On the list, with Missouri with and Indiana with preceding her. nois follows, with 1,557, and next comes Ken- tueky, with 1,517, and Ohio with 1,49. Tae order still seems to flourish most in the Southern and Western states. The great State of New York has but 0 granges, and Pennsylvaniaorly 48%, New Jersey 8, Con- necticut § and Massachusetts but ¢ 2,06 The newspaper press friendly to this city generally commend the liberal appropri- ations—quite two million dollars—which Congress made at its late session for paying the expenses of the District and continuing the improvement of Washington, and regard them as settling once for all the willingness f the general government to bear its pro- portion of the expenses In governing this District. The New York Herald of Satuniay has an encouraging article on the revival of business through the spring trade. and predicts that the coming months will be active in that line. ‘The Chicago Trifune, of Thursday last, is con- fident that a return of commercial prosperity 4s about to take place in the west. It says that one of the trustworthy signs of an un- usually rapid and strong revival of business ‘this spring is the excelient condition of the farmer class. The result of the railroad con- troversy, it claims, has destroyed the middle- men, and thereby directly improved prices for the agricultural classes. The prospect for fair prices and a good market this year is Most promising. Even the financial writer in the New York Tribune admits that there are unmistakable signs of the coming revival im business circles. —_——_-+22-—______ Friends of civil rights who tarn their anx- jous eyes to the south watching for indica- tions of a weakening of the color prejudice, will take beart on reading a story told by ‘Whe Raleigh (N- C.) News, which shows that im one direction at least negro equality is Teeognized. The “ease in point” is that of a colored man who visited the State National Pavk, in Raleigh, and insisted upon his right, under the civil rights law, to deposit im that institution, “jus de same as ‘ite folks.” Like a sensible man the pres- of the bank yielded to the majesty of *.° law, and took the “man and brother's” 1 acey on deposit. ——_-+ee.______. e decision of the Attorney-General, weed elsewhere, ought to send up the price Le District 3-65 bonds. x «< ‘The proposition tunnel thé Hudson river, fo as to afford New Yorkers an easy access te New Jersey meets with opposition from property-holders among the forner on the ground that it would bave a tendency to de- preciate their realestate and increas> tho | value of Jersey lots.
