EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON: March 2, 1875. ‘The appropriation of 810,006 for the poor of the District, adopted In the House to-day on | motion of Gen. For the benefit of advertisers who desire the widest possible publicity for their an- nouncements we publish the following figures Total Circulation for the Werk.. Average Daily Cireulation,.... District oF erm - ashington County. John Dice, Pressman for The fod ngmie Star Newspaper Company, hav: —— first duly sworn, deposes and says: That the figures above given are correctly stated; that they represent the number of copies of THE EVEN- ING STAR printed and delivered from the press room on the days named to supply the current and ordinary demand therefor, and that, to the best of his knowledge and belief all of said number of copies were actually sold and circulated as the usual and regular daily editions of said paper. Joun Dice. Sworn and subseribed before me this 21 day of March, A. D. 1875. (SEAL) Joun T. C. CLarx, J. P. Samuel G. Young, Cashier of The Evening Star Newspaper Company. being first duly Sworn, deposes and says: That the figures above’ given are correetly stated; that they it only the regular and bona fide cirea- lation of THE EVENING STAR newspaper on the days and dates named, and that no copies were printed or furnished for gratuitious cir- Lamon rg or on account of any fictitious, ir- lar, or extraordinary orders, or for any ou purpose than to supply the current and average public demand for said EvENING STak, and further, that all of said copies were actually sold and cireulated in the uni- form and usual course of business. Sam's G. Younc. Sworn and subscribed be‘ore me this 2 day of March. A. D. 1575. (sraL.} Joun T. C. Crarx, J. P. Advice to Advertisers. ‘The Sprincfield Republican has adopted the Practice of publishing authentic statements of the extent of its circulation. We have often urged that all the newspapers should t this plan. It is the only way in h advertisers can be made’ sure that their money is not taken from —_ on false pretenses. are scores of newspapers which have no circulation worth speaking of and In which advertisements are merely a Joss of money. The advertising public, how- = have no means of discriminating be- ween papers which have a large circulation ana those which have very little. If adver- tisers would agree to advertise in no paper that does not publish sworn statements as to its circulation, ef Would find it as much to their advantage as would the pa: which pers Subecribers.-ivew York Graphics = st of Recognizing the force of the above, we haye adopted the sensible, business-like practice suggested; and a sworn statement of the reg- ular bona-fide cireulation of Toe EvENING STAR sppears at the head of this column. The fgures, large as they are, simply repre- sent the normal, average circulation of THE Svar mainly amongst regular subscribers, ata time when we are not publishing doudle sheets, and no exciting events have occurred to swell the cireulation temporarily. We believe that it is no exaggeration to claim that it is a very much largercirculation than that of all the other Washington papers united. It is also within bounds to assert that the circulation of THE STAR Is not only exceptional amongst afterneon papers, but that in proportion to the area of population reached, it is the largest of any daily paper, morning or evening, in the country. It is a curious fact that when Tae STAR came into its present hands, in October, 1867, its cireulation (of about 6,000) was considered So exceptionally large that many supposea it could not be increased, even if it could be maintained under the anticipated sbrinkage of the population and business brought here by the war; but the result shows that Tae STAR has gone on steadily gaining in cireu- lation, year by year, until it has reached a Point nearly three times higher than that considered high water mark for a Wash- ington paper in 1867. This demonstrates not oniy the wide popularity of the paper, but also that an intelligent reading population has been growing up here in due proportion With the notable material growth of the city Within the last half dozen years. 4t does not seem tous that the facts and Sgures set forth above in regard to Tar ‘Stak need any elaboration. They speak for themselves, and with convincing force to all business men and other advertisers seeking to reach the isha hergeet number of vende ers. —+202- ~The Railroad Wa: ‘The warof the Pennsylvania and Baiti- more and Ohio railroads continues without any sign of surrender on either side. As was supposed would be the case, the action of the Pennsylvania road in reducing the freight tariffon Cumberland coal has compelled the Baltimore and Ohio road to come down” in the matter of rates, twenty-tlve cents per ton. It is given out by the latter road that this reduction is made “in view of the gene- ral depression in manufacturing, steamship, and other business interests,” but this de- eeives nobody. It is quite certain that the reduction is made only because the action of the Pennsylvania road in lowering freights, compels it. It appears that the Cumberland coal transportation business of the Balti- more and Obio road has increased since 1368 fiom seven hundred thousand to two millions Of tons annually; much of the coal going far north as the extreme manufacturing and shipping points in New England. Under the fresh impetus given to the trade by the ‘re- duced freight rates brought about by the War of the railroads, it is probable that the from the Cumberland mines, espe- cially during the winter months when the canal is closed, will be greatly increased. ——-<0e-______ Is a life insurance policy void in case the insured person commits suicide? This ques- tion has been answered both affirmatively and negatively by different courts, and con- sequently remains undecided. A case was Teeently brought before the United States Supreme Court which it Was thought would determine the matter, but the decision . and was a suil upon a policy of Iife Insurance where the insured person com- smitted suicide, and the company refused to pay.
