Largest Circulation in the District: 736 ‘The Late Featares of the Beecher The reserve which is helt by the greater portion of the daily press York in re- gard to the extraor rial of the Rev. Mr. Beecher is proper enough, or otherwise the case would be pretty fully ut, asthe N.Y. Ji remarks, there are phases of the tri which must provoke comment; for it isnot merely | @ trial—it fs a revelation. As Mr. Tiltoa sues for indemnity, which he will not accept in money, and Mr. Beecher defends his repu- tation, there is less d: r from outside comment interfering with = court of law. eution has be admitted on every y strong one. The evi- dence of Mrs. Moulton ix not o° ly corroebora- tive of her husband's testimony, but is euma- lative in the strongest possible degree, in time, circumstance lace, in showing the repeated confessions n * to her b; Beecher of his guilt, and of m to free his mind a an open confessi pure, careful, judicious w Liced the Beecher’s chureh four fies, when “she lost her faith ture” and “her faith in man,” on sion to her of his gut!t. This testifying under cireumstan ainfal to > any modest woman, is about the only one Who comes off the stan without being smirchet. Shortly after he summoned Mr. Beecher to his pres- ence and accused him of a crime. He ad- dressed a letter also to Mr. Bowen, remind- ing him that he had accuse Mr. Beecher of other crimes. Under the pressure of this let- ter, and from other reasons wh doubt, quite subordinate to i paid Mr. Tilton a claim of seven thousand dollars, and signed a “covenant” with Mr. Beecher and Mr. Tilton proclaiming peace. This peace continued and Mr. Tilton founded & newspaper. Mr. Beecher, through Mr. Moulton, contributed five t sand dollars to this project. The paper did not sucesed, and Mr. Tilton, driven to the l by hisown embarrassments, by an unfortunate sympa- thy with Mrs. Woodbull’s strange, inal cies, and by the somewhat reckless of Dr. Bacon, turned on Mr. Beecher and dragged him before the world as the destroy- er of his home, his influence and his fame. The reasons for this opinic e now at last before the world. Mr. Beecher stands charget with adultery, perjury and falsehood, upon the evidence of Mr. Tilton, Mr. Moulton and the latter gentleman's wife. It is now for Mr. Beecher to disprove all of these crimes. Frozen Water Pipes. On the principle that misery loves com- pany there is a melancholy satisfaction in knowing that there are ten thousand baild- ings without water in New York city, through frozen water pipes. It is said, indeed, that there is hardly a dwelling or public build- ing in that city where more or less incor ¥enience has not been felt from the freezing of the pipes. The hotels have been greatly embarrassed. while saloon keepers state t not only are they deprived of water, but their beer tanks. soda fountains and even barrels of liquor had to suceum> to the eotd. ‘ands of dollars’ worth of vegetables have been destroyed by the the city, and particularly among the stocks sale dealers. ax they have no means of heating their buildings. i w how to avert such dim- eulties * weather.
