And well thes That clause of the postal law is the most beneficial to the majority and especially to the ever was framed. It virtuall, mails the poor man’s expr mpany, and ata merely nominal cost. Unier it, for ex- ample, a family living remote from any large town, or even from a store, may bave the whole stock of the largest retail establishments in the country at its disposal. Writing a letter and enclosinga stamp to the nearest town or even to the largest cities, (total cost from four to six cents.) will secure by return maii a large assortment of such samples as may be wa ed, with prices, ete., all plainly market Another letter, transmitting the price, will bring back by next mail the desired article, At @ cost less than one-twentieth on an aver- ageof what it would be to have the same thing carried by express,—if, indect, there be any express facilities at all forthat par- ti@lar locality. Tuis puts the country pur- chaser practically on the same footing as those living in the cheapest and best sup- plied markets. A hundred other examples might be cited showing the great benefits of the law as it stands, but they will occur to gent reader, and it would be only a waste of ‘space to state them. To repeal the law woutd merely aggrandise a few wealthy companies, while it would lay a heavy tax upon the people of the whole country—forevery family and person in the land is interested in cheap transportation, especially of smail parcels— and at the same time it would deprive those out of reach of the express companies of all means of transportation of that kind. The system works admirabiy in England, where large and valuable packages are constantly sent through the mails, with as much confi- dence as deposits are male in # trast com- pany, and it is certain to beeom+ more popu- lar and indispensible in this country, day by day, as the public learns its great a lvantages. If any member of Con, ts to commit official suicide, let him take sides with the express companies in this m: —— poe Prof. Dor, in Berne, has recently again called attention to the constantly increasing rate of shortsightedness among school chil- dren, ranging in the hizher classes now from 50 to@ percent. Causes of this are said to be:—Arrangements and wall color of school Tooms; the too small type used in text books; the use of. white paper for school books in place of some more grateful tint to the eyes; finally, the bad gas light which children are campelied to study by. —__-<se— Beecher seems to have a remarka' ty for placing himself and other pec the edge of things.
