THE FLAMPS SUPPRESSED WITH COMPARA- TIVELY SLIGHT DAMAGE. At 1240 o'clock to-day an alarm of fire was turned in from box 68, U.S. Signal office, G street, between 17th and 18th streets, “arse of the discovery of a fire in the east en'l of the upper story of the Navy Department building. Freights from Washington to way points on the Washington Branch are in some instances fourfoll of those from Balti- more. As an example, the freight on a bar- rel of flour from Washington to Beltsville is 50 cents, the distance 13 mi The freight from Baltimore to Beltsville, 27 miles, is 25 and so of other freights. Now, while aitimore and Olio railroad is asking favorable legislation of Congress, let the merchants move in this matter, and let them insist that the railroad in question shall have no favor granted, until the freights shall be so regulated that Washington shall be at no disadvantage. Many persons along the line of the Washington Branch prefer to deal with the merchants of Washington, but are un- willing to pay the extra freights. Now, I hope you will ventilate this matter and keep it before committees of Congress until Wash- ington obtains ful! justice. Respectful “FAIR PLAY.” AFFAIRS IN Lovpoun County, Va— Trial and Convietion.—A_ colored man, known as Mississippi Charles, a character notorious for his bad conduct in this county for a lot time, was tried for an assault last Septe ber upon Mrs. Appel, an aged respectable lady, residing near the Point of Rocks.
