Largest Circulation in the Distriet Have the Money Ready. ‘Tre STAR agents who circulate the paper throughout the city frequently complain of the inconvenience to which they are put by the failore of subscribers to have the small amount due weekly or monthly, ready for them when they call. Nodoubt this occurs frequently from mere thoughtlessness on the part of sutscribers. It does not occur to them, perhaps, that the agents are required to pay for their papers weekly, and that it is & matter of serions embarraasment to them when any considerable number of their cus- tomers fail to pay promptly. If subseribers Will give this matter consideration, and take @ little pains to have the amount due ready for the collector when he calls on bis regular days, they will doa thoughtful service to the hard-working and painstaking men whopro- ¥ide them with Tne STAR every evening. .. If we recollect aright, a somewhat similar bill was introduced and went to the wall last session. Doubtless the salaries of many officers of the government whose compensation is swelled to large amounts by what is commonly called “pickings and stealings” and by le gitimate perquisites, might be reduced to ad- vantage, but to diminish one-tenth, the pit- tances received by government clerks, ts @ beggarly measure of economy, and one which we are glad to believe will receive neither the support of Congress nor of the people. se -—_ Hon. Horatio Seymour, who once had the honor of a nomination for the Presidency thrust upon him by his political admirers, and who received quite an ovation in the Senate chamber yestertay, is looking much older than when he stood before the national democratic convention in New York a few years ago reiterating “ Your candidate I can- not be.” It is@ matter of wonder that the democrats of his state did not choose him for the Senate instead of Kernan, but the ways of the politicians are past finding out.
