TAR. DOUBLE SHEET. _ WASHINGTON: SATURDAY...... January 25, 1975. r « OABY S. NOYES. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Have the Money Ready. ‘Tre STAR agents who circulate the paper throughout the city frequently complain of the inconvenience to which they are put by the failore of subscribers to have the small amount due weekly or monthly, ready for them when they call. Nodoubt this occurs frequently from mere thoughtlessness on the part of sutscribers. It does not occur to them, perhaps, that the agents are required to pay for their papers weekly, and that it is & matter of serions embarraasment to them when any considerable number of their cus- tomers fail to pay promptly. If subseribers Will give this matter consideration, and take @ little pains to have the amount due ready for the collector when he calls on bis regular days, they will doa thoughtful service to the hard-working and painstaking men whopro- ¥ide them with Tne STAR every evening. .. Editor. ‘Two Newspapers Virtuous and Happy. The Kepubiican this morning, commenting upon the fact that amid the wreck of reputa- | tion by the Pacifie Mail hurricane, the | Staunch and soum! As the boy said when he overcame the temptation to’ steal meions, ‘honesty is the bes? polie>- man.” A due observance of the experience of this juvenile would have obviated the aj pearance in the offices of the smaller journals of the staiwart form of Colonel Oriway or some of his deputies. Though Tus Star and Republiem may Well afford to indulge in some mutual { tations over this conspicuous illustration of the cood policy, as well as the right policy of conducting newspapers on principles of Moral rectitude, yet it ts due to our cotempo- raries to promptly give them the benefit of any refutation they are able to make of charges or insinuations to their detriment. He was | elected to the Senate in 1873, and his ereden- | tals went to the same committee, who were | divided four against four on the question of | his admission, those against contending that the legislature which elected him was an Megal baiy. No direct vote was ever taken, and it is stated that on the Uthinstant Mr. Pinehback resigned. This, however, he is | said todeny. In re-electing him a few w eks ago the Louisiana legislature adopted a res- | olation, the first part of which reads—“That the Senate (or the House) of the state of Louisiana do now, in the manner provided | by law, as if in case of vocaney, proceed to re-elect Senator P. B.S. Pinchtmek United States Senator,” &c., for the term which will expire March 4, 1879. It is claimet that this eleetion was illegal, inasmuch as it violates ® United States statute which says that “whenever during the session of the legisla- ture of any state, a vacancy occurs in the representation of such state in the Senate, similar proceedings to fill such vacancy shall | be had on the second Tuesday after the legis- Jature fs organized and has notice of such | vacancy.” The New York Evening Post per- tinently asks if he did not resiga why the language of the resolution of the legislature, as if in case of vacancy”? If we recollect aright, a somewhat similar bill was introduced and went to the wall last session. Doubtless the salaries of many officers of the government whose compensation is swelled to large amounts by what is commonly called “pickings and stealings” and by le gitimate perquisites, might be reduced to ad- vantage, but to diminish one-tenth, the pit- tances received by government clerks, ts @ beggarly measure of economy, and one which we are glad to believe will receive neither the support of Congress nor of the people. se -—_ Hon. Horatio Seymour, who once had the honor of a nomination for the Presidency thrust upon him by his political admirers, and who received quite an ovation in the Senate chamber yestertay, is looking much older than when he stood before the national democratic convention in New York a few years ago reiterating “ Your candidate I can- not be.” It is@ matter of wonder that the democrats of his state did not choose him for the Senate instead of Kernan, but the ways of the politicians are past finding out.
