ING STAR.. CROSBY S. NOYES........Editer. Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON: January MONDAY. 4, 1875. = The Star in New Type. It is perhaps not necessary to call the at- tention of the reader to the fact that THe STAR appeara toxlay in a completely new dress. The great wear and tear of material, consequent upon the high rate of speed which our immense revolving printing ma- chine is driven, in order to meet the wide and constantly inereasing cireulation of the pa- per, renders these renewals of such frequent Occurrence as to elicit little or no remark; but what we wish the reader to observe in, this change is the larger and clearer type in which the reading matter is now set. Its body is the same as that heretofore used, so the quantity of reading matter will not be re- duced, but it will be scea that its fare i broader, more open and distinet, so as to e much more legible and satisfactory to the general reader. The great problem to be solved in the pub lication of such a paper as THE STAR,—tha: is, one that undertakes to give a complete reflex of the world’s doings each day, and at the lowest price possible,—is to soadjust con- Micting forces that its daily history shall be not only full and complete, but at the same time be printed as clearly distinetly as Possible. This result will be found to be at- tained, we think, in the dress in which the paper appears toriay. In order toconstantly secure this end frequent renewals and con- Sequently large outlays of money are re- quired; but these demands are cheerfully met, as it isthe determination of the pro- prietors that the paper shall be at all times and in all ways worthy of its liberal and growing patronage. —_ -+ee-__ President Grant and the pauish-Cn- ban Complicntionn, Unquestionably the Administration has been bampered in treating Cuban affairs by its thoughtful and creditable destre not to embarrass a young sister repubiic, struggling to maintain her supremacy over the mon- archical party at home, and amidst the un- friendly monarchical powers surrounding her. That source of embarrassment is now re- moved by the return of Spain to a monarchy, and henceforth President Grant will beabieto Maintain a policy towards that country con- sistent, on the one hand, with national comi- ty. and on the other with our national honor, Which demands that we should, at least, re- e the same redress from Spain for the irginius outrage that Great Britain has de- Manded and received on behalf of her own Subjects. The President. as iuticated by all the utterances of the press, will be fully en- dorsed by the American peopie in carrying out the policy upon Cuban affairs indicated in the measured but emphatte language of his Message. +20e-_____ If th in Official of this country not to be envied that official is the mayor of New York. Under his administration are more contending political elements to be reconciled than in any large city in the wow. It is seldom that a man can serve his two years as mayor of the great American metropolis Without making large numbers of enemies even among his own political adherents. Mayor Wickham enters upon his duties sur rounded by endless complications, and as a Tepresentative of a faction that has stood defeat on the ground of the most shameful municipal frauds ever perpetrated, and claims now to deplore nothing more then the crimes of its former leaders. Much is ex- pected of him and his party, and his official deeds will be more rigidly serutinized than those of any of his predecessors for many years. ¥v ———___-~e--____ Country lawyers of limited practice bu With a fir Congressional acquaintance, or better still, ex-members, hay ing the run 0 the floor. ought tocome to W: ‘ashington with- Out delay. There is pro- bably no place in the country, if in the world, where “professional” services are so well pai for or where the such light duty as act- ing as “counsel” or making an “argument” before a committee is so remunerative as in Washington. And the beauty of it is that it is all clear profit—nooftice expenses, division of profits, or anything of the sort! —-.ee- THE NarioxvaL Liprary.—The Pwhlish- er®’ Weekly, the organ of the book and sta- Uonery trade in the United States, in a long notice of the last annual report of Librarian Spofford, warmly seconds his reeommenda- Hon for a separate building for the library—a legislative library to be retained in the capt- tol building, as he proposes. We heartily agree with Mr. Spofford “that a separate “building for the Library of Congress, constructed through- out with special reference to its it ne- cessities and future growth in its manifold departments, is demanded alike by a wise Tezamt to economy and public poll ” We are sure indeed t there will be no one to impeach his argument among any who know any thing about libraries or books. & question of what the government ought to to Go, but of how soon it ean do it. ————_-<eo-—— The Washington correspondent of the dem- ocratic New York World; Mr. Watterson, in bis Washington letter to his paper, the dem- Gcratic Courier-Journal; and the republican editor of the New York Evening Post, all make strong appeals for the re-election of Senator Schurz, on the ground of his honesty ©f purpose, his soundness on the financial Question, bis enlarged ideas, liberalism, &c. But we are afraid the appeal will fall dead upon the demoeratic legislature of Missouri ‘who are evidently bent upon electing an un- diluted Bourbon to the U.S. Senate. Query: Was William T. And as inquiries on the subject seem to be in order, we venture to ask another question that is pertinent to a ease that may at any time arise, if it does not exactly apply to the one in point. Did it ever oceur to the “general of the army” or any of his friends that by the removal of his headquarters to St. Louis he placed himself in @ position where it woulkt be literally im- possible for him to be “consulted” in the event of an emergency requiring prompt ac- tion on the part of government? ———_—_-+ee-- It is thought that the “nervous prostra- tion” from which Irwin, the Pacific Mail witness, suffered so acutely week before last Will be “ catching” along about to-morrow, in case he takes the stand and is compelled to tell all he knows about the manner in which the corruption fund that passed through his bands was disbursed. Whether he will do so Or not remains io be seen. The opinion enter- tained by a good many is that he will keep ais secret to the end, but with the majority these the wish is doubtless father to the thought. The general impression is that the sub-committee has gained so many points in New York that the whole truth must now some out, or at least enough to play sad bavoe in a good many quarters. four ing Deo. ‘Sst, pay: at 3:9) o'clock, commencii With Rev 0-H. Hardly a week has gone by since his abduction with- out presenting such a case. Where do these Boys all come from? who do they belong to? and what becomes of them? The fact that so many of them answer the description of littie Charley ts very strange, but not sostrange as the more important and suggestive fact that s0 many children should be found under sus- picious or peculiar circumstances, apparently without perents, relatives, guardians or friends, or any one who is able and willing to throw light upon their identity.
