Cirenlation in the District WASHINGTON CIT THURSDAY. ..December 5 Largest vertiners, anusry ith, Tuz Star entire new dress and other- nan roved im appeara: © to be reset for that bank our yearly advertisers who bave any bange made in their an- in the new copy for before Saterday next. th purp Where this is not me the same matter now running will be w The Presidents Message. SOMETHING ANCUT THE FORESHADOWING ( THE DOCUMENT. The New York theme of the Prestdent responsible for the telegraphing of a misstatement of what the President really said in bis anrual message in relation to oar unsettle: with Spain; first, through the general press associations of this country; and next ough Keuter’s European ne And the charge has been made that the mis- repreee ou was for speculative pur, h which the President’s na conn Apart from the specu! of the New Herald, it bas been stated in axother quarter that an abstract sage aretvlly prepared for the purpose of preventing the ng of the document, whieb, bas always occurred when un: 4 abstracts of such papers bave been mate; and that if any garbling oc- curred afterward it was done elsewhere than in Washington. Now, we rece here of the two press associations, in their foreshatowieg of points in the Presi- dent's message, said that their information was devived from friends of the President, who had uw as pleted his messsg; and it was therefore reason- ably to be inferred th ly would find a publ ‘ance in his message. And we know, from carefal inquiry this morning, that the President had nothing todo with the shaping of the foreshatowings, nor did he superindace any publication what- ever; nor did any person connected wi Execu ansion, or with the Csbinst, know ef apy publication to be made, mach less pre- pare an abstract of the message, in adyau its tranemission to Congress. It is trae that Keuter’s agent telegraphed substantially on Monday what had appeared in i press statement, and made it appear to be the exact language of the Presi. dent, when he should have copied from the meseage itvelf the exact words, in order to p vent mistake. This is all there is in the matter, about which an unnecessary agitation has oc curred. The foreshadowing of the contents of the message by the agents of the two Press As- Socistions is to their credit. They came nearer tothe truth than many who had essayed the same service. The individual sources of their infor- mation is known to themselves, and is a pro- testional secret ‘into which it is not our business to inquire. +20-- _ Tue Disease oF Tae SovTH.—oOur southern friends are the victims of a disease which crops Out im every inftitution of that section. The labored discussive editorials of the press, the utterances of the public men upon every occa- sion, the conversation of the people even in Bours of business, all tend to show that the South is badly afflicted with politics. This is a southern hereditary disease, and ita aggrava- tion now is in a great measure due to the results of the war and the great prominence given southern a:tairs by the national government. It | is nevertheless a great evil to have #0 much of the time and energies of the young men wasted in political discussions and the detatls of politi- cal affairs. The few prominent politicians are alone |.enefited; the rest then tarn to negieczed | business affairs, which have grown tobe dis- tasteful anc scen become irksome and unprotita- | ble. The southern people have suffered much, and it is to be hoped that wisdom and expe rience may soon prove a cure for this disease, which is killing s0 many of their precious hoars | which should be devoted to trae progress and industrial development. —_——__-+e---_____ ConTINENTAL Pargg Mowey.—Massachu- setts issued paper money as early as 1699, and the then colonies of New York, Penn- | aylvania, and Virginia followed: Sd the amount tm; circulation in 1773 is | variously estimated at from $7,000,0% to $25,- 000,00. This had depreciated in comparison with the value of a Spanish dollar in different Placee, the par walue being four shillings and | stxpence. n New England and in Virginia it | took six shillings to make a dollar, in New York eight shillings, and in Penusyivania seven, and it is Bow no uncommon thing to hear values reckoned in those eections according to the revolutionary usage. Especially is this so in the market places where the necessary articles ef-life are aold. When Congress in 1775 ad- dressed itself to the business of raising money, the total smonnt of specie in circulation in the country was $25,000,000, and Continental paper money was issued as follows: . 85, | é baving exhausted its | is now seeking to make | agency. | at the agents | 4 with them freeiy after he had com- | t what he had said pri- | a the | | Eveping at 6 o'clock. | pSatiestic TMPLAB KNIGHTS T t “@ \ Ry disper 4 Mn f hoebts Ten piar of the Ua, nae corelaveot COLUMBIA COMMANDERY | stilts peld at the sepium, Masonic T.
