The sharp sparring of counsel in these preliminary skirmishes, gives an indication of heavy blows | ‘when the main battle fs entered upon. General | Roger A. Pryor, formerly well known in Wash- ington as an editorial writer of vigor, if not always of discretion, turns up now quite promi- nently as one of the counsel for Tilton. He holds = pretty conspicuous position st the ‘New York bar, where he has practiced since the close ofthe rebellion. A New York paper says Of bim in the present case: ‘His appearance | and oratory were thoseof a Methodist revival. ist. His enunciation waa rapid, his manner nervous, and his inilections a little exaggerated; and there was the earnestness, the rolling of R's, and some of the sing-song usually to be found in the most effective of camp meeting exhorta- tions.” Mr. Evarts, the “‘big gan” for Beecher bas not yet appeared in the case, but Mr. Shear- man, the bosom-friend of Beecher, a3 well ag his general legal adviser, has thus far taken the front in hie behalf. He is described as an effa- sive little man, with a wonderful volume of voice for his size. The most effectiveof the counsel on either side who have figured thus far is Mr. Beach, whoappears for Tilton. His ora- tory, it ts stated, ‘wae from the start far more impressive than that of either Gen. Pryor or Mr. Shearman. His dignity of demeanor, his elo- quent diction and his perfect elocation were telling in their comb'ned effect.” It te steted that there is unumal activity in business circles in New York in the way of clos- ing up accounte for the year, but that in other respects there is little or nothing doing in the way of new trade, nor is any expected until January. The retailers have been doing a fair Doliday business, bat expect a siack time after this week. He is one of the members- elect from Minnesota, and an explanation ‘Would doubtless be soothing to his constituents, } } A Mixzp Quaenen.—tse supreme court of appeals of Virginia has recently decided that the states of Virginia and West Virginia are jointly and separately bound for the debt of the old state of Virginia. The present state has only claimed that West Virginia was liable for ‘One-third of the debt, and that state has repa- Gisted that claim on the ground, principally, that the money was expended mostly for the benefit of East Virginia. Under this decision the question arises as to how a Virginia state creditor can recover oat of the jarisdiction of that state. This, of course, carries the whole | matter to the Sapreme Court of the United | States, where the constitutionality of the act of the separation of the two states will be in- volved. Sheri- | dan better on closer acquaintance, and tells them that the General “can be a very peacefal man when he tries.” As now stated, however, General Sheridan's mission is not belligerent, but quite to th to the contrary. The monopolists of the Pennsylvania coal | combination who fixed the prices for coal and | got them for every month this year; and fixed the | rates of wages and paid no more, are not yet happy it appears. They now propose to re- duce wages and drive their men into a strike. ‘This will throw twenty-five thousand men out | of employment in addition to the sixty thousand already idle.
